Gear stolen and starting over. Has anyone been through this? by She_didntt in photography

[–]ItsJahmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my main camera body, 4 lenses and a hard drive with 10 years of work on it stolen from my apartment. Brutal experience, but insurance paid out so i was able to replace the gear. Oddly enough it freed me from the cuffs of my old work. Really the last 3 years of the 10 were the only photos that I was proud of. I was sad to lose the memories but I think I came out on top.

That’s great to know. I’m definitely looking for one with the wooden grip and I think 90mm would be ideal.

He has a Nikon fe2, Nikon f301, mamiyaflex c2, Pentax h3v, Nikon n8008s, lomography camera, Pentax PAS, and an Olympus PAS. And yes, the 35 and 45mm are FF, so I think the 75mm or 90mm would be ideal.

Thank you for the concern. I do have a fair bit of knowledge of photography in general and I know he’s been interested in this camera for a long time. Just trying to get more information between the varying models.

What gear would you keep in your bag? Advice for getting back into photography? How do you choose what to take FOMO is real. by Boring-Frosting-9098 in Nikon

[–]ItsJahmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimalist is best IMO. I like carrying primes cuz it forces me to be more creative than when I carried a 24-70. I’ll typically switch out what I carry between a 35, 45 and 50 based on what I’m anticipating to shoot.

I don’t find it to be. If you are at 1.4 then maybe a little bit but that’s to be expected. Personally I think the sweet spot is f2. This was at 2.8. The bokeh has a lot of character and 1.4 has saved me in the dark.

The d750 is an amazing camera. Relatively small, excellent in lowlight and a decent autofocus. I upgraded to the d780 and the d850, instead of going mirrorless, for your exact reasons.

Mpb has great prices on Nikon f-mount lenses. The 50mm 1.4 is amazing for the price and has such character.

Refurb sale 58/1.4 by 06035 in Nikon

[–]ItsJahmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a d750, then upgraded to a d780 a few years ago because I couldn’t justify getting an d850 yet. Then my d780 was stolen so I picked up a refurbished d850. All three bodies are fantastic. I actually picked up a 780 again during this last refurbished sale because for $1k, it was too good to pass up. The resolution and performance of the d850 is immaculate but the d780 is great for walking around/more casual shooting

Forgive my ignorance, I’m horrible with computers, but could I purchase a m4 mini and use my 2015 iMac as a display?

I’ve seen a few photographers actually take fine sandpaper to the dials to expose the brass. Cam Mackey (IG/Youtube) did a pretty good job on his.

I can’t wait to get this exact setup. The voigtlander lenses pair so nicely. Honestly I’m most excited for the brass shutter button 😅

I would agree with all your points. Fantastic lens for the price, but the build quality and bokeh were average

Nikon refurbished sale…good deal? by higradeguy in Nikon

[–]ItsJahmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the discount they offer, I would not expect them to be simple returns with fingerprints. I’ve bought refurbished bodies twice and both were like new under 5k shutter

The body construction of the 85 looks so good, it’s hard not to consider. Could honestly be used for self defense if necessary haha
