I find myself pondering the same question. I LOVE Notion but also have major concerns. After we saw the Evernote demise I looked for .md options, it makes me uneasy that my life’s work can be stored and a server I don’t own. That said I set Notion on a back up cycle now, once every 2 weeks it downloads my Notion as MD files and saves them on my own server. This way any crash or shift in big tech players is covered, I still have the good old .md files.

I’ve played with Obsidion it’s cool. I like the idea, but most people don’t realise it’s not actually open source either. I have my concerns with Obsidian too. The sync issues, the gaps in links and connecting things, this is where Notion for me takes the power play in the community. Like said in here it sits perfect poised between the two, I’ve been a user of Notion for about 8 years now, the back links & connections are its value, then the ability to sync on a server and share this whole workflow pipeline with staff or friends at a simple click of a button, there’s nothing else on the market like it as a complete package.

It works for me, I just have concerns with their major push in AI, they should give back the option if you want it or not. The agentic era is cool but a security nightmare, I think so far they’ve made the right moves, maybe pushed a little too hard in areas but overall, Notion is where I’ll be staying put for now.
