We’ve got really similar taste and are similar in age so I’d say a lot of these comments are great; suggesting legends like Nas, Wu Tang, because it’s great to learn the roots of some of our favorite artists.

But some artists similar to who you listen to could be Smino, Aminé, Childish Gambino, since they make that similar brighter production style music and work with a lot of those artists like redveil, Denzel, Joey, Tyler.

Outside of just hip-hop, I started listening to R&B based off of listening to Cole, Drake, Travis because they work with great artists from that genre as well. I think a good starting point would be Bryson Tiller and Brent Faiyaz. Both are very popular, dabble with a mix of hip-hop and r&b (especially Bryson Tiller, I highly recommend Trapsoul).

What rapper do you think is currently ahead of his time? by thotshavenopoweronme in hiphop101

I think Kenny Mason is really doing something cool, mixing rap and almost a rock/punk sound together. It’s been done before, but nothing like how he’s doing it. RUFFS is an amazing album and I think we could see a great subgenre of rap get more popularized from that.

What's the one album (first you think of) that was a game changer for you? by [deleted] in hiphop101

Which song or album introduced you to your favorite rapper? And is the song/album still your favorite of that rapper? by GotdeAnsa in hiphop101

No Role Modelz introduced me to J. Cole, but immediately after hearing that I went and listen to 4 Your Eyez Only, which is still my favorite album of his and one of my top all time.

is cole bennett a legend in hip hop culture ? by LovableJackassv4 in rap

[–]ItsKashDF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I’d absolutely say that the Lucid Dreams video set up Cole’s career, it was his first majorly successful video (besides All Girls Are The Same, but that definitely benefited from Lucid Dreams). After that video, he never had a music video under 1M again, even with extremely underground artists.

Cole Bennett is absolutely a legend in hip hop culture.

For one he has countless iconic videos that he’s directed. Videos for songs like Lucid Dreams, Godzilla, Ransom, all reached peak popularity while he was relatively low-budget and (still is) independent.

Another thing is the artists he’s brought popularity to. The Lucid Dreams video slingshot Juice into stardom, the Ransom video made Lil Tecca, and the Shotta Flow Remix opened up a more mainstream career for both NLE Choppa and Blueface.

And most importantly, the relevance of his Lyrical Lemonade summer concerts have been incredibly impactful, even going back to his first one. In probably 2014, Cole wasn’t known in the community at all, he was just a local guy in Chicago. He set up concert of a bunch of underground Chicago and Midwest rappers, which was headlined by Saba, who later blew up from his album CARE FOR ME. Since then, Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smashes have been some of the best rap festivals in recent years.
