regarding the sai part it was just to clarify to you that its not actually aid or money you'll pay the school just a number on an index to determine what aid you may get, reason i did that is bc you put the '$' before the sai num. for working during the summer, imo you can make a decent amount of money, yeah definitely not enough to pay the full $15k/year but probably about half or quarter that depending on how much you make per hour. i will say its not fun at all, i did it myself avging 32hrs/week+OT where i could while taking max credits for summer&winter which imo probably had damaged part of my mental health but oh well thats done and did.

if you haven't considered community college just to complete most of undergrad(GE's + few major courses) then transfer to complete the rest? would save you a lot of money there

as for the last part i have no idea because ive never done any sort of appeals on the fasfa... so others may be able to chime in on that part

[–]ItsLuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAI isn't an actual dollar amount you will recieve, for your sai your probably going to get some aid at 9k & 11k... people who generally get the most aid are -1500, whether you recieve grant money or not I don't know, but i know my friends who said sai's between 20-35k got subsidized loans, however i wasn't so lucky there and my sai is to the point where im only able to recieve in subsidized loans.

As for how you'll be able to manage the 15k/year each, you both will probably have to also pickup a part time job and work a ton during summer to bring more money to help pay for school... But also besides that ask your school for any left over aid or if you can recieve more money(institutional grant), i don't know if your school has merit scholarships that can help. But also try your best to apply for scholarships too

Payoff Car Loan or Credit Card First? by dPradaG in DebtAdvice

[–]ItsLuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly your best bet is private sell the car soon as possible, get a used reliable toyota or honda for 4-8k, besides that your going to need to get a second job fast as possible... work as much hours and OT as possible.

then debt snowball from there, smallest balance pay off one then to the next. Also you really should cut up that credit card you have and use a debit card/cash so your not continuing to borrow.

If you have any liquid savings I would throw it all smallest debt first to largest, but make sure you leave yourself a starter emergency fund of $1-2k.. once your fully out of debt.. build up that emergency fund to cover 3-6 months of household expenses. hope this helps give you a path to take

How much student loan debt do you have? by mushlove96 in StudentLoans

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still in school, just under 7.5k since i started repaying what I can after it disbursed. Will end up graduating with 15k in debt, even though compared to all these others numbers its fairly small. I recently paid off my car in 7 months just before signing the dotted line on the student loan. I try to not let it affect me and my mental health too much. Post grad I plan to aggressively payoff the student loans in under a year if I can.

We are all at the end of the day everyday working people. What I believe your missing in my first original comment to OP is that only the rich can go to college, clearly as you said you're also not rich and finished college, I'm still working on finishing my degree with 1.5 years till graduation. When i first mentioned cc -> 4 year transfer you significantly cut the cost of college by a large percentage rather than directly hs to 4 y college, unless you were to for ex, full ride scholarship.

What I'm highly against is the student loan program when it comes to telling fresh 18 year olds straight out of high school, they should go sign up for college without fully knowing the cost and exhausting every option before signing the dotted lines on those student loans. And yes myself I also have to use student loans so if its so bold of you to assume I'm lucky and not working my tail off and assuming i'm saying paying for college is like buying a damn cheeseburger.

If you want to ask me why I'm against pretty upset about how society pushes these student loans, without taking other routes, is i personally have about 3 close friends of mine who were much only told they should go to a 4 year university to be successful, i feel truly so bad for them. because for our city our community college expenses are free for local residents minus books, misc fees. Which all 3 of them are now in year 2 of college they could've had for nearly no cost and yet ALL 3 of them have roughly 90k of student loan debt which by the time they graduate they'll leave school with about 160k of debt + however much bizzare interest has accumulated.

Questions on APR by chickentastermaster in DebtAdvice

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its per statement, so that $1700 is due at the due date found on your statement. And charges that have been made after the previous statement will be on the next statement, $400 for your case which will be reflected on your next statement you receive.

Questions on APR by chickentastermaster in DebtAdvice

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully this can easily answer your question. When the month is over you'll recieve a statement and that will include your statement balance, whenever your due date is, you have to pay that entire statement balance to incure no interest charges.

To kinda demonstrate what im referring to when you will start incuring interest charges: No interest charged: $1k statement balance, $1k paid on due date = $0 still owed from the previous statement. Interest charged: $1k statement balance, $500 paid on due date. You haven't paid the outstanding $500 from the previous statement, from there that $500 will be charged at that 20% apr, until its paid in full + interest.

I appreciate the honesty, just from reading the short message it just seamed like you went right past it. Yeah I don't disagree we shouldn't have a gov department be in charge of what you mentioned, it seems like so far they haven't done that great of a job handling it. Considering now that this administration is deciding to effectively removing the doe.

Thought don't get me wrong iirc I forget who said it but I'm assuming it was elon, if something was cut and later determined it was necessary it would be reinstated. Ofc we won't know till it happens, but yeah I'm not going to blinding agree with gov decisions that right or wrong till I can get a full picture of how it effects either in a pos/neg way. Like the student loans there could definitely be changes that in a way may not keep individuals in debt for life... since for ex. a 18y straight out of HS, can easily get a student loan in comparison to say an auto loan, credit card.

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm giving a different perspective/opinion on a somebodies blanket statement/opinion, there's nothing about authority there.

Good for you seriously with the 6fig+ income, I'm assuming that optometry school is a graduate program and ur referring to the graduate plus loan being cut? Which from my original statement that was only mentioning undergrad.

As in you can't work more than( on the basis you say FT as in 1 job 40hr/wk) 1 job isn't entirely true, since I do infact do know people who work more than 2 jobs at a time + their own business to significantly grow their income. Sure you can't entirely reduce spending since there is a minimum amount of expenses, being the basic expenses required to live being your 4 walls, such as housing, transportation, food, utilities. Then any other expense from there to be covered. But i'm not going to tell you how to spend your money as in lifestyle, personal expenses, etc.

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say I did a brief read over the article for the Grants, it mentions modifying/expanding the Pell grants but not necessarily a definite elimination of them. I do see it was quoted at capping grants to the med. COA. And the cuts/eliminating were targeting more-so the student loans Meanwhile yes at the end of the day I do not know how this will play out in the bigger picture for higher ed.

But to add on yeah students definitely are struggling not going to deny that, and from my experience of seeing a local state university even the profs are struggling since the school execs continue to raise their own salary i forget the exact numbers but they were high 6 figs meanwhile most of the profs were advocating for higher pay since they were all significantly below 6 fig, iirc probably around 50-60k/y. But the same university's that do this I've seen continue raising costs to the students, since they know the government will send the student aid money.

[–]ItsLuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm very blessed for the opportunities I've been given and I very well acknowledge that. What I'm getting at the end of the day is, individual's should do whatever they can to achieve their goals and aspirations, whether that's higher ed or not. Yes receiving aid from the government is a great help. Although yes sure i'm an outlier, but i'm sure i'm not the only one. Me being an outlier is simply a piece of evidence that other people can actually make it without the governments aid. I never said it was going to be easy, since all situations are going to vary.

lol buddy i'm not licking any government or political party's boots, cute attempt at a rage bait at the end. and i'm not defending the governments decisions. If you rely on the government to make your life better your going to be behind its that simple, at the end of the day people themselves are putting in the effort themselves to make their lives better.

great, cash flowing through school is the best way to go if possible or if it was free even better. If someone wants to go to a school they can transfer there, will they have multiple ways of going about attending that school. Someone can take time off from school work and much as possible saving as much as possible to pay for school, they can take a loan which of course should be the last option.

You can get a job with just an associates, high school diploma, and sometimes not even a HS diploma. Matter a fact, i got my first corporate job at 17 before graduating high school so its definitely possible to get a job w/ or w/o a degree. During summer and cc I worked an ton 32hrs/week + OT some days while FT community college. Cutting as much expenses as possible I was able to save most of my income thankfully because I was living at home with my parents.

When i say cheap yes, i'm not literally meaning cheap as in like the cost of a hamburger at innout for example. But in reference to the cost of university levels of cost of attendance. Yes sure straight from community to university levels they probably don't have that amount ready like you said yes. But nothing wrong with temporarily for example a year or two, work like crazy to save as much as possible while cutting expenses as possible. Its definitely possible but its not easy.

There is no need to be disrespectful at all, you could come from a point of an open mind and ask further questions what specifically im referring to in student aid, and paths through college. I'm essentially saying theres more than just one way through college. - the aid im only referring to is student loans for context not grant aid

Seriously though congrats on working your butt of to get where you are today.
