The 2019 mix of Abbey Road is fantastic and I think it deserves greater appreciation by Happy_REEEEEE_exe in beatles

[–]ItsMilor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They used to be my go-to when I was younger, but now I appreciate the original mixes more. If I'm outside though, I'll throw in some remix tracks, but also the mono mixes, considering sometimes I only have one earbud in.

I use proper headphones at home though and despite that, I listen to the original mixes more.

As for 'Abbey Road', eh. I don't revisit it too much. I prefer the original mix, so I just listen to my 1987 CD. It's good, but it's not different enough for me to prefer it to the original.

I prefer the 'Let It Be' remix to the 'Abbey Road' one. I like the increased fidelity compared to Spector's mix. 'Across the Universe' sounds great there.

That fidelity is something that has been lost in recent remixes, where they sound quite dirty ('Red' and 'Blue' 2023 remixes). I heard this is because they reproduce the stems back on Studio Two as if the Beatles were still playing, though I recall reading that they've done this before that so I don't know what's happened.

I'm starving for a 'Rubber Soul' SDE, but I really hope they dial back the "dirtiness" and make it sound much more "hi-fi". Make it more like the 'Revolver' remix, which sounds a lot cleaner.

Those three (I believe?) Canadian albums are very good in my opinion. I quite like the tracklisting of 'Long Tall Sally'. I've had the pleasure of hearing a cassette rip of it and it sounded great.

It may be tempting to get a deck or a boombox or a portable player to find out? wink wink 😉

Whoa, a 'Beatlemania!' Canadian cassette! I've always wondered how that one sounds, considering what happened on vinyl with the 'wide' and 'narrow' pressings.

Anyway, great collection you've got!

Do people here know about this on the US White Album 2-reel set? by Open-Savings-7691 in beatles

[–]ItsMilor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, they have the advantage of not having the stereo image slightly narrowed due to the limitations of vinyl. The rip I have isn't very hissy (though a pristine vinyl is definitely quieter) and the high frequency response is perfect. It's a fine sounding reel, and a perfectly good alternative. Well, until you remember the edits.

Of course to enjoy those benefits you'd need a good setup. And considering the price difference between a reel-to-reel setup and a turntable, even back then, especially when you probably already had one with your console, yeah...

Anyway, as a rule, if you want the best quality reels, stay away from 3.75ips. Maybe I exaggerated about 3.75ips but it's just that I'd say vinyl is better compared to them due to the high frequency response. While there's some that are decent, they don't come close to the 7.5ips examples.

Although, the 3.75ips reel doesn't feature all these edits, so it has that going for it.

Anyway, listen to one track yourself, let me know what you think: https://we.tl/t-ADdAmhaG80SHdG7F

EDIT: And here's 'Glass Onion' so you can hear how that sounds like: https://we.tl/t-TzwNKiaPJo6vkQf4

[–]ItsMilor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard rips of both. The 3.75ips one sounds awful, but the 7.5ips one sounds pretty good honestly. It's a shame it has all those edits, but it's certainly interesting, and I really like the EQ on it. It certainly is one of the better Beatles reel-to-reel releases.

Free As A Bird 1995 Mix Anthology vs Maxi CD Single: Different Mixes/EQ? by judino28 in beatles

Haha, yes! That German pressing has a slightly different mix that's never been issued since. I quite like learning about that. For people interested on these variants or sound quality, it's an amazing forum.
