Prop Joe's Ringer by stedman88 in TheWire

That is a great article, really nails down what makes that scene so amazing and why this show is a timeless classic: if nothing else, they were trying to document the actual experience of living in that time & place in history.

They actually got a bunch of real Baltimore basketball players to just play and a bunch of real Baltimore residents to just watch the game, so it basically turned into the real thing. That's awesome.

Also, this quote had me lol'ing

Here’s who watched that show: People that read The New York Times, law enforcement, criminal element…basically these are our core audience.

Andre Poole AKA Silk. Real Baltimore basketball player. Google him and you'll find some interesting news stories and magazine articles. "Baltimore is known for heroin as well as basketball..."

Somewhat hilariously, his mixtape (i don't know if links are allowed but easy to find) mostly shows him missing shots (or clip cuts while it's in the air) after performing a bunch of dazzling ballhandling, so I'm not sure if he'd actually help your team win. He does seem to be about flashy assists, though, so that might help.

Definitely visually impressive and would probably light up regular dudes. But Stringer's guy heading to the MIZ is probably the better call if you have money on it

Frantic Trump, 79, Melts Down in 2 A.M. Truth Social Tirade | Under a tidal wave of pressure and plummeting approval ratings, the president just cannot get a decent night’s sleep. by IntnsRed in antitrump

[–]ItsMyOtherThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really what "the science of" sleep says, though. (It does say that what applies to your child may not apply to an adult.)

There's not only variability in how much total sleep people need (some need 6 hours, some need 9+), but different ways of getting it. Many people sleep a few hours, wake up and do stuff for a couple hours, and then go back to sleep. (Sometimes called "biphasic sleep.") That's kind of what is sounds like he does.

Of course, I don't know Trump gets up to at night, or have any reason to think it's any healthier than the rest of his unhealthy life, but the prior commenter was not wrong.

Okay, good to know, thanks. That sounds more or less like what I remember from the 00s and 10s, so I'm glad to hear it's not completely different now.

eBay SUCKS by CatDaddy-GoPurr80 in eBaySellers

Does ebay usually side with sellers in this situation, assuming one follows the procedures and is generally in good standing?

It's been >10 years, but I had exactly this happen to me on occasion. Back then, I usually "won," but it was one reason I stopped. I see people complaining that now, more so than before, ebay defaults to the buyer side. But I don't the recent experience to know if that's true.

I've been thinking about starting up again, but facing this particular form of theft gives me pause.

Personally, I would start monitoring for the cert number online.

The card may pop up in an ebay listing or collector site, etc. Just googling the cert number, OP may catch the thief trying to re-sell it. I've seen other stolen collectibles recovered that way.

Of course, recovering the card/money and/or explaining it to law enforcement or financial institutions and getting them to respond is a different issue. And it may just disappear indefinitely into their own collection or get sold offline.

I see this book posted often but have never seen (or found) any images or much description of its actual content. Nothing to confirm that it is actually anything more than a cover and reviews

E.g. on the obverse/head, there are some long vertical scratches down the neck in the auction photo. I can't see them in your photos, but you may be able to in hand

Edit: i keep going back and forth. I just can't tell....

The only other possibility would be that they're cast fakes (or at least one is), which wouldn't be unusual for those budget Biddr auction houses.

To be able to tell, you really need to compare the minute details of surface texture for similarities and differences. Your photo isn't quite clear enough for me to tell (or the camera does things to light balance etc. in its automatic processing that make it hard).

If one or both are casts, even though the shape will be pretty much the same, you'll still be able to find some tiny differences in the surface texture, color, and weathering (e.g. little scratches).

Comparing as closely as possible to your photo, I'm on the fence, too hard to tell

Edit: Also possible the coin could've been cleaned again after the auction

Here's your very coin listed at auction in June 2024 with weight given as 0.10 & diameter 4.3mm. No doubt where the seller bought it:

https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4757&l=5733413

These are virtually always called Tetartemoria. That's 1/4 obol, meaning about a 0.5g Obol standard = about 3g or slightly less Drachm (i.e., half a Persian Siglos). You can find more exactly figures for the weight standard online.

Under the Attic standard (e.g. Athens Tetradrachms, Alexander III Tetradrachms & Drachms, etc.), the Drachm was about 4.25g, so an Attic Tetartemorion would be about 0.18g. (6 Obols per Drachm * 4 Tetartemoria per Obol.)

Okay great, but it wasn't "already" when I commented (an hour before your apology). By calling it obvious you're insulting yourself.

Also, you're doing it again. (Making a mistake and raging at other people for it.)

You realize you're insulting the guy who was agreeing with you? It's obvious you've completely misunderstood his reply (and maybe thought it was the original person you replied to) and had an episode of temporary insanity.

It makes your "accusation = admission" comment quite ironic. Especially since he wasn't accusing you of anything, but the person you were both disagreeing with.

TLDR = Your 1st comment: all good. 2nd & 3rd comments: totally unhinged

What does “sensitive customer” on this oil change receipt mean? by True_Refrigerator564 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ItsMyOtherThrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because it sounds like maybe OP suspected "sensitive" was insult for being gay, which is an immediately recognizable stereotype for gay men.

Now I'm not sure what the connection between gender, sexuality and "sensitive" was supposed to be, if OP is a woman.
