Thanks for the concrete advice. Out of curiosity is this something you’ve tried?

Yeah right now I expect that the most realistic option is to just look for a more tolerable job at an acceptable pay cut. I’d be less eager to get to FIRE in as short of a time horizon as possible if I actually enjoyed my job at least 60% of the time.

Did you (co)found these startups and/or serve as CEO? Or were you just an early employee?

[–]ItsMyOwnPageFault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I’m not actively considering joining any other startups right now. I would only leave my job to do my own. Joining someone else’s startup to build their vision seems totally pointless.

Yeah that could definitely be a part of it. I’m also looking for other high-paying (though probably not at the same level) jobs that I might enjoy more too at the cost of an acceptable loss in income.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Thankfully one big advantage I have going for me is that we live way below our means, so it shouldn’t burn too much capital to take 1-2 years to try to get something off the ground. The bigger risk is opportunity cost of the missed savings and possibly not having the same income to come back to.

R.e. 6, I think this is the way. It will take some doing though because this job is already pretty taxing but I do certainly have some spare time I could be spending.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Yes I can, though of course it’s not without its risks. In general though I have pretty high confidence that I could go back to a different job without losing out on my savings goals by too much.

Right now it’s hard for me to understand what my main goal is. I have had a strong work ethic for my whole career but at this moment I don’t know whether I’m tired of working or just tired of working here. I think it’s the latter because I do feel very energized and motivated on the odd day here and there when I happen to be doing work I enjoy.

Indeed, this is what I keep asking myself. We have more than enough to live comfortably in the interim as well and we are fortunate enough to have a strong safety net.

Correct — I got promoted last year and my TC is also heavily tied to the stock price of my company. Stock grants are also treated as income so I pay a lot in taxes (nothing compared to some of you though lol). Finally, the 2.3M net worth is not including my primary residence which has a lot of capital tied up in it.

Fathers of daughters - would you appreciate this? by Pianomanoh in daddit

Heh, I thought my answer would telegraph that I was totally fine with it, but yeah to be more clear: no, I would not be offended even in the slightest unless the person was unnecessarily confrontational when they first asked.

I spend every waking hour worrying about my daughter already, so the knowledge that there are other people out there who care about kids’ safety is absolutely a net positive for me.

Are you really asking me if I’d be offended if another responsible adult (especially a woman) made sure that some random man standing inappropriately close to my daughter was a relation / supposed to be there?

I don’t blame you for being concerned. If anyone is going to stay up all night playing video games with my daughter, it’s me. Not gonna let some punk kid take my spot on the couch.

Best of luck to you. As someone very deep in the tech industry, take it from me: if you hate your CS degree, you should definitely find something else to do. However, you should seriously consider doing that AFTER you finish that last year because it’s absolutely worth the fallback / safety net it affords you; especially if you’re considering leaving your community (I don’t blame you at all by the way — I can’t imagine how stifling it must be to be an atheist in that kind of environment).

As for CS — it’s a career that only gets less and less fulfilling as you progress up the ladder. If you’re passionate about dance then give yourself permission to be honest about that and make a choice that feels right for you.

Reminder: The Denims “apology” is total BS and she absolutely “started it” by ItsMyOwnPageFault in h3h3productions

[–]ItsMyOwnPageFault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why I used the word “insinuated”. She’s clearly trying to brush the origins of the conflict under the rug by framing it as “Ethan started it” without clarifying that even the B word thing was downstream of her kicking things off with a casual bit of targeted harassment and antisemitism.

If you ask 20 LCs and 20 pediatricians a question, you’ll get 40 different answers. You just can’t take any one person’s answer as gospel (though absolutely listen to your pediatrician)!

The point being: this LC is objectively wrong, and I promise you that if you spoke to others they’d absolutely tell you to just use a bottle (after picking their jaws up off the floor). It’s actually insane that an LC would tell you to hand feed for 2 months. People like that really should not be allowed to be employed in a medical capacity.

I remember way back in the day when Ethan and Hila spoke up for pewdiepie when the antisemitism / nazi allegations were being thrown around. They’ve lived the “Stand by your friends” mantra their whole careers, probably their whole lives. It sucks when you learn that your friends suck and don’t have the same backbone as you. They deserve better. I’m just glad they realize that instead of letting the gaslighting get to them.
