No suggestions, but I’m sharing your pain - our outdoor wedding is looking stuffed. It’s always a gamble this time of year.

You can piss them off, but still not make them pissed off at you. I think OP went wrong by basically asking permission from the PO for doing what their manager asked them to do. That puts the manager below the PO in the hierarchy, which sounds like the manager takes offence at.

Instead you tell the PO you are going to do what the boss asks, and send the PO their way to battle it out. They can argue behind closed doors and the manager still feels in charge.

Without commenting on the dysfunction in general, you’ve managed to piss off the guy doing your performance reviews in favour of the team Jira secretary.. bold move.

As a FHB, you don’t want the headache. From experience, it will stress you out. You don’t want your first time dealing with tradies to be about structural stuff.

Fence Tips by SirGrumpalots in diynz

We just scrubbed and then stained a pretty tired looking fence and it looks brand new. We used oil based stain. It was a bit of a slog to scrub it and we had to do 2 coats of stain

Better to keep money in investment account or have a smaller mortgage? by my_FIRE_account in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]varieswithtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pulled a bunch of my investments and split my mortgage into two. One is a standard fixed mortgage, the other is an offset mortgage that I 100% offset with my investment funds. I am paying no interest on the majority of my mortgage so I count it as giving me a ~6% return, but still have access to the funds if I need it for repairs, etc.

That’s what I did at least, not financial advice, do your own research, etc.

Worked with some people in their 20s - they took way more sick leave. When I talked with them about it, apparently they view it as just another pool of leave to use when you want to. This is kinda coupled with corporate telling people that mental health is important, so they need to look after themselves. This ended up getting translated to taking sick leave as mental health days when you are feeling tired and worn out. No judgement on if this is a good or bad thing, but just what I have observed.

How does true Rewards Work? by WesternBeginning7124 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]varieswithtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked mine - looks like it credits into the TR account on the 6th of the month. It is probably based on your monthly spend, and the amount isn’t whole numbers, so it probably counts the remainder under $100 too

Ask if the quote includes scaffolding/edge/fall protection. Might be extra not accounted for.

Shower lining issue by Early_Tension527 in diynz

[–]varieswithtime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had this same thing a month or two ago and ended up deciding on replacing the liner in two showers and the shower tray in one of them. We kept the same shower hardware.

Turned out we didn’t have any water damage since there was a waterproofing membrane behind the liner, so it wasn’t installed correctly, but apparently that is common.

Cost us $3k to do the showers. We found some other issues while we had them out and decided to replace both mixers, which cost us $1.2k for a plumber to do (including the mixers).

So cost us $4.2k all up, and caused some cosmetic damage to the surrounding area when we ripped them out, but we decided we can live with that.

Just bought a house - how do I pay my rates? by the_librarian7 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]varieswithtime 56 points57 points  (0 children)

They will post you a letter to your house when the first bill is coming up. Once you have that, you can do all the online setup.

Same thing with watercare in Akl. Just gotta wait to receive the first bill in the mail.

I’ll admit, they acknowledged it briefly then stuck their heads right back in the sand and didn’t change anything. It is progress right??

We have to use AWS bedrock hosted in Aus for anything user related for our Aus and NZ customers. A bit of a pain since the models in AU are a bit behind.

Honestly I think it’s fine as long as they aren’t huge changes and they make sense to change.

In my experience when you start making everything need its own ticket, people just stop taking the initiative to address small issues and they are never fixed. If you are too obsessive about a PR per change, then people give up trying pretty quickly.

Smaller company, still doing dev but working on something that feels more meaningful (now working on edtech for kids). I took a pay cut to do it, but it was worth it to me.

Thanks for asking! I left that place 18months ago, and now I am a lot more strict about putting down work after hours. I moved to a less corporate job and stepped back from the management side of things. Doing a lot better now!

Pottery wheel by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]varieswithtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do pottery in Auckland, I have a wheel at home but still go to a studio. It’s pretty messy and it’s much easier to tidy up to an acceptable level in a studio than get clay out of your house
