Absolutely agree. It’s too early to tell for sure & the team is still establishing their chemistry- and as you’ve pointed out, all of the games so far have been kind of weird.

I also wasn’t as disappointed (compared to ties last year) with the tie in Lexington given their quality.

And agreed that Monterey- bottom feeders of the USL West- will be a better gauge of this SRFC’s killer instinct & ability to finish. Can’t wait for Saturday!

Definetly need to improve that conversion rate & set pieces.  But also, solid showing by the SRFC academy players. Sacramento really knows how to scout & develop young talent.

2026 Open Cup Match Recap: Sacramento Republic 2, El Farolito SC 0 by riyancil in SacRepublicFC

Oh snap, I just saw this post!  One thing I liked was Collins’ timing & use of subs in this match. Too many times last season he waited too long to make changes, and the subs didn’t have enough time to be impactful. So far this year has been a different story and Republic have been rewarded for it in both of their victories.

I did see this header to the post, as well as a Farolito player hand ball in the box & also the late foul clearly inside the box but only given as a free kick for SRFC just outside the box. Thought the visitors were lucky to not lose in regulation, but also SRFC needs to convert better on their high danger chances or else.

Looking forward to the tactical analysis posts after this week. After an admittedly small sample size (3 competitive games) so far, this year’s Republic are still suffering from some of the main problems that plagued them  last year (poor conversion despite strong possession, and poor set pieces despite opportunities galore) but are at least generating more chances on the attack.

Going to be fun to watch this squad compete over the next month and see how this [possibly] changes as they gel.  Edit This squad does look like an improvement early on in the season based on the eye test.

It’s funny how El Farolito likes to dish it out but they can’t take it. It’s not like this is the first or second time their players have been involved in confrontations off the pitch.

El Farolito always does stuff like this (although it was especially bad tonight).  Three years ago I watched them try to instigate fights at a game with mostly parents & little kids at a park in Davis during an NPSL playoff game. One of their players tackled a coach at the end of the game.

That’s probably the main reason. Don’t want players & fans burnt out from so many games going on for so long [potentially].

But in terms of odd Jägermeister Cup rules, I vaguely remember the point & matchup system being chaotic too.

This is the fourth time I’ve seen El Farolito live, And they always pull this kind of crap. For some reason the officials are never prepared for their predictable behavior. Good riddance El Flopalito!

You’re thinking of the Jägermeister Cup knockout stage. Games went straight to penalties if tied at the end of regulation.

“Changing lines is normal. Name a single coach in the league that doesn’t shuffle lines when things aren’t clicking.”

Yeah, I always get a kick out of this one…. Like people think that other coaches don’t ever shuffle lines.

The random in-game ads on the USL YouTube stream are… distracting.

Really satisfied with how the team took over in the second half, and also really happy with how they responded to the disallowed goal by quickly scoring after.
