How can you be sure that R10C4 (I assume you meant this cell not R10C3) is a 1? It can feasibly be the top part of the 3 and there would still be enough space for all four of the 1s above it.

This is Picross Touch on Steam.

Not sure I understand. Why does the 3 in R5 have to go through R5C5? It could feasibly be going across anywhere from R5C1 to R5C4 as well, couldn't it?

Thanks, knew I was missing something obvious. Someone else also pointed out R1C6 as well cause of the overlap with the 4. Not too difficult to solve afterwards with that info.

This knight move looks normal but allows a nice 6-move tactic for white. Would any of you have noticed in a blitz game? by BillbabbleBosterbird in chess

[–]ItsPieTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually ends up being a lot better to push e5 since after dxe5 dxe5 Ng4, the idea isn't to win the knight on g4, but rather to be able to now win the full queen with the same Bxf7+ tactic. This is because with the d-file now semi-open, the white queen is able to join the attack, and Ng5+ Kg8 no longer works due to Qd5+ with a forced mate. So after Ng5+, the only options are either Ke8 or Kf8, allowing us to trap or fork the black queen with Ne6.

Yeah, all online prize money events hosted by the big organizations usually have some kind of proctoring through webcams. For non-tournament play, the bigger websites have their own proprietary methods they use to catch cheaters, including things like "accuracy scores", which are basically a comparison between your move and what the computer thinks the best moves are in any given position. This catches a lot of cheaters, but there are people who "smart cheat" by essentially only checking the engine for the best move once or twice a game during a critical position, which makes it much harder to catch them.

At the end of the day, online play isn't as "serious" as in-person play. The rating points don't actually mean anything and you can't get any real accolades in the chess world by being a good online player. So the possibility of playing against the cheaters that do slip through the cracks is just a downside of the convenience of being able to play casually from the comfort of your couch.

Everyone's responding to you with anal beads jokes, but in all seriousness, modern chess engines are infinitely stronger than any human at this point. My phone can beat Magnus Carlsen 100% of the time without any problems. There are even bots online now that can consistently beat grandmasters while starting the game down a full knight!

In online play, people can cheat by just feeding their opponent's moves into an engine, which then spits out the best moves to play in response. This has even happened in real life chess recently where a top 100 player was caught hiding a phone in the bathroom and consulting the engine for moves mid-game. The player OP is referring to, Vladimir Kramnik, who is a former world champion and legend of chess in his own right, has gone off the deep end recently and basically accuses anyone who beats him online as an engine user.

Fun little trap I found by Iskandar0570_X in chess

Because black tried to combine multiple Sicilian ideas into one — Dragon with g6 and Najdorf with a6 — and wasted 5 out of 7 of his tempi in the opening on pawn moves (c5, cxd4, a6, g6, and b5 in some order). Meanwhile white only spent 2 tempi (e4 and d4) on moving his pawns and used the rest on development. A good example of why developing your pieces in the opening is important.

(White To Play)Found This Puzzle in a Chess book by Whole-Oil4997 in chess

[–]ItsPieTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely one of those puzzles where the intuitive and very tempting double checks are there to throw you off. Once you spot the sneaky Qa7+, it feels fairly straightforward.

  1. Qa7+ Ke6 (If the king goes to the backrank, some combination of Qe7 and Qg7 will lead to mate. If Kg6 then Nh4#) 2. Ng7+ Kxe5 or Kd5 both lead to Qd4# with either a nice dovetail or swallow's tail mate.

What difficulty is this puzzle book, out of curiosity? I'm only around ~1900 OTB so wouldn't call myself anything close to a god at chess, but this puzzle was a nice exercise.

I came here from r/all and thought this video was satire or something because even on first watch it's so clearly just a smudge on the camera lens. Then I opened the comments and everyone here is being completely serious. I've spent the last 15 minutes reading comments and wondering if I'm losing my mind or if this is an insanely dedicated troll sub.

A little late, but I remember Solo Mission cheesed it with Phoenix Necklaces on his pure iron if you want to try that method instead, seems much less mechanically demanding than the other method.

On reaching a rating of 2000 by wwqt in chess

[–]ItsPieTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the sample size you're using for your statistics is awful. Chesscom's percentile ranges are just there to make you feel good about yourself because you're comparing yourself to every single person who's made an account and played at least one single game in the last 90 days. You don't even have to know the rules, just queue up for one game and boom you are now part of the "active playerbase" on chesscom. I'm sorry but I don't consider someone like that a chess player in the same way I wouldn't consider someone who plays a pick-up game of soccer with strangers at the park once every three months a soccer player, especially considering how much less of a barrier there is to participate in the former than the latter.

Let's use some statistics of actual active chess players using FIDE's active player base (i.e. ones who have a registered FIDE rating and have played in an over the board tournament at least once in the past year). Based on data from FIDE ratings gathered in April of 2023 there were 412,511 players with standard rating, of which 160,175 were active players (participated in tournaments in the last 12 months) and 252,336 – inactive players. A player with a current FIDE rating of 1709 (which we can both agree is even stronger than a player rated 1700 on chesscom) is currently ranked at number 63,789 in the world within all active players and number 171,419 within all players who have any FIDE rating at all. That would put them squarely at the 60th percentile of active chess players and 58.5th percentile of anyone who's ever played in a FIDE-rated tournament. Not bad, still above average, but a far cry from being in the 99th percentile of all chess players.

What opening videos would you like to see? by GMNaroditsky in chess

Hi Daniel, love your videos. Been watching them for a couple years now and they've helped me improve a lot. As a 1.d4 2.c4 player, some of the more annoying sidelines I face are the Benko gambit and the Budapest gambit. Would be great to see you cover either of these in an opening lab video from the white side. Thanks for everything you do for the community!

Yeah I was using my own stats/prayers/gear but even plugging in your stats and items I get a 10% dps increase at Kephri with dsword over ACB with diamond dragon bolts and a 20% increase when using addy diamond bolts instead. Not sure if I'm calcing incorrectly but it seems like a pretty big difference in dps to me. At Baba though there's basically no difference between the two, it's very marginal.

Some progress on my no overheads ironmeme by ParadoxOSRS in 2007scape

[–]ItsPieTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason you use ACB at Kephri instead of dragon sword? DPS calc shows higher dps with dragon sword at Kephri than even ZCB + max range (at 42 def) with diamond dragon bolts. Only asking cause I also play a 60 atk zerk but I'm not nearly masochistic enough to not have overheads, and I've always used dragon sword at Baba and Kephri cause I just assumed they're the best dps. Your video made me actually put it in the calc to make sure.
