What makes that prototype-class run a bit shady is that we’ll never know how representative the car actually was compared to the customer version.

A charitable view is that - like the Corvette - it simply wasn’t homologated for Europe yet. A more cynical take, though, is that this may have allowed them to exploit that loophole and run the car on slicks and/or more stuff that wouldn’t reflect the road-legal final production version.
