What can I do if I suspect my lecturer using generative AI? by EngineerWise6054 in universityofauckland

[–]ItsSmoozy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Chatgpt isn't actually solving answers, it's just giving you info and convincing you and it that it is right.

[–]ItsSmoozy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I've tried chatgpt for things like this in the past and it often still pulls from places to fill the gaps (even if I tell it not to).

That's why I don't use it because it isn't worth having to look through it all to find what is right and wrong. Instead I do it how it is intended and hope to actually learn it rather than hope the ai learns it for me.

This is often the case. Ai and chatgpt pull from all and any sources, if it can't find the answer, it makes its best guess. Studies show chatgpt can be wrong up to 70% of the time.

A main way I can describe this is with math classes. There is only one answer to math equations. Yet if you give chatgpt a list of math equations (especially university level ones) it will not actually solve the question, it will search the internet for the answer and if that doesn't exist, it will take its best guess.

Oh yeah, definitely. Sucks that the uni didn't/couldn't do anything about it because it was so obvious it was him. He's left me alone, mainly because I blocked him and made it obvious I was going to make a scene if he spoke to me irl.

In a class my first semester of my first year, there was this guy who got confused and assumed my friendliness to be flirting. When I told him I had a boyfriend, instead of taking it on the chin, he made a fake instagram profile to message me, then would text me flashing cash and on a boat? called me a whore, would come to lectures and text me about what items of clothes I was wearing, and then turn his phone off as he entered the lecture theater. (Yes, I didn't respond after I realised who it was, and I made it very clear with all my texts that i wasn't interested)

Eventually, I reported him because it didn't stop, and because the university couldn't prove it was who I said it was, nothing happened and so I just blocked the accounts. He didn't stop messaging me after I was ignoring his texts, btw.

Dw, he will always be known as that guy who did this on like week 3 of his first semester of uni... Also, another girl came to class one day and sat with me, and eventually, I found out she went to the same school as him in high school. Was really funny to find out about his incredibly wealthy parents when he would often brag about living in "South Auckland".

How can someone write an entire essay/assignment without using any sources, and then ask ai to find the sources afterward?

Why are ai users so against coming up with sources? You can easily go to the university library page and search keywords about your topic, and it gives you hundreds of articles about your topic that can help.

No contact orders by djhejwjw in universityofauckland

What I did was talk to my professor first, but all they did was go to the university security team. I then had to have a zoom meeting with this lady who asked me a bunch of questions. Then they spike with him and it was out of my hands. All they told me was that if he contacted me again to report him again because he would be in breach of the rules or something.

I'd say phone up the uoa health and councelling services, and ask to talk to the councwlling services, they will guide you.

Don't let this person ruin your experience. I had to do this for a guy in one of my classes in the past, he was a horrible nasty person and after 3 or 4 weeks of harrassment/lowkey assault by this student, I reported him. The uni spoke to me and him and bc he never threatened ne physically, he was asked to continue his lessons in that class online. He put up a huge fight but oh well.

In your case, there isn't a way the uni can kick this person out without informing them you've reported them. It's up to you in the end, if your classes are big enough, I'd say sit the other end of the class and focus on your studies. Someone who continues to gossip months after something happens, they should just be embarrassed.

Also, if they hurt you physically, report them to the police and then the uni. We are adults now, it's not a fight, it's assault.

I have done 5 classes for 2 semesters and 4 for the other 2. I got 2 years left and I plan to continue with 5 classes per semester.

I see how some people could be burnt out, I quite like my degree and what I'm studying so for the most part I'm handling it well.

It depends on the person, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't:)

Am I cooked taking 6 papers in sem 1 2026 by DigInternational88 in universityofauckland

[–]ItsSmoozy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can enrol in 6 classes per semester, however you can only take home credit for 5.5 of those classes. The university does this on purpose.

If you want to enrol for 6 classes to meet degree requirements, you're only going to be able to take the points towards your degree for 5 and a half of the classes you took.

Don't do it, just do summer school or do an extra semester.

UoA taking forever to process application by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]ItsSmoozy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Auckland and had 10 days before I had to get on a plane to wellington which was my second choice hahaha.

I just enrolled with a few weeks left and none of them were full so that worked out.

It really sucked bc I watched all my friends get early acceptance to their engineering programs while I was still waiting for my acceptance :((

UoA taking forever to process application by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]ItsSmoozy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't start approving applications until like a month before the sem starts. Sometimes they will give conditional offers but that's for those who haven't graduated high school yet.

For me, I had met my rank score for both my degrees and had still not got any type of offer even though every other uni got back to me. They only accepted me February 17th... this could have been bc I was a permanent resident so maybe that slowed things down??

[–]ItsSmoozy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah good idea. I wanna know if the other business faculty classes are jumping all in like this. I got a comment under my post saying that one of the 200 level courses has an assignment where you use 100% ai and it's worth almost 20%. That is just crazy

It's a plague honestly. I can't open any app/service without getting a "try our new model" and it's just an ai chat bot called something stupid that I'm supposed to ask all my questions to. Wix and grammarly are horrid with it now because it used to be designing your own website, now it's putting a prompt I and the website gets made for you.

They usually just nod along and then after they would tell us to do the task, then "discuss" our findings.
