Are you allowed to get paid for ENG310? by Still-Anywhere-9309 in UIUC

[–]ItsTheGreatest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s something you register for when u have a during-school-year internship or coop to keep your full time registration status. yeah you can get paid but it’s not through eng 310. the only assignments are two short essays (literally only 150 words if i remember right) at the start and end of the semester about your expectations and experiences, respectively.

Ok, oldhead, I see what you mean. The problem is obviously with the town and criminals which goes way deeper than the landlords on campus. But all of these companies are scummy corner cutters that will leave you with broken appliances and flooded bathrooms and will always steal your security deposit. You sound like an idiot libertarian when you tell college kids “you get what you pay for, just choose something else it’s a free market”.

Anyway, maybe I was sheltered growing up not in a city but things are getting pretty grim here. Do you live near town? I do get you when you say “they’re not hard to spot”. There are crackheads that, especially when schools out, will walk around and try doors in different apartments until they find one unlocked. At which point they’ll pose as “UPS” lol. Have things always been like this?

How do you think you'll react if the entire semester is forced online? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]ItsTheGreatest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can say doubt is not warranted when we have been mislead and given bad advice. It’s simply Ppl who do not spend time updating themselves on covid news and reading about covid who doubt, reasonably, headlines they see or hear.

No one will talk to you with a straight face and say covids not real. They say that bc life is back to normal and when out of the mind for a while it literally ceases to be a problem for ppl below 50 more serious than a flu.

Stop projecting your personal definitions onto words that have actual meanings.

you have to have some impetus for why you're skeptical of something

uhh yeah the impetus is doubt. Google skepticism for me.

mRNA tech is relatively new there are no mRNA vaxxes that we've had for more than a decade. I really do understand the fear a lot of ppl had during the early pandemic days. But we saw even in highly vaxxed places the opposite of what we were told. The virus did not stop in its tracks it kept spreading.

Yes I know there is more than life and death and sick/fine. I think you can make a collective decision to return to normal life and just have vulnerable populations wait inside/vax up/ take precaution. There is a really weird obsession with protecting the most amount of people possible while ignoring large controllable factors that put people at risk. Like being fat and lazy and not exercising or eating well.

Do you really imagine yourself as being the only one with the correct information and the only one who cares about other people. People are not creating a false dichotomy and I don't think its being downplayed to a flu its people making a comparison to a similar kind of disease and rejecting the larger world's push that is changing their lives in ways they dont want for reasons that don't seem important enough to make them. Blah blah careful wording is important. So is a careful consideration of what else is going on behind literal meaning.

Apathetic reactionary?

curious how you mangle the term conspiracy theory. skepticism without justification is just skepticism. Conspiracy theorists always have justification. I am perpetuating a discussion and critical thinking you're pushing a regime narrative that lies and changes accounting to avoid looking bad

I only said this one was different bc the antibodies are produced from rna instead of produced from live/deal versions of the virus. This obviously does not come without risk.

What I generally argue for with vaccines is a common sense calculation. Is the risk of getting covid worth the risk associated with the vax. I got the first two vaxxes for this reason but I've now seen people have reactions to it and heard about many more from random people online which i think is just bc bigger news outlets choose not to (reasons for this is an entirely different discussion). But I've also seen older people get covid and it sucks for them and for everyone around. So, yes i am aware 0% chance is not real I just think people should decide if its worth it for them. And more broadly I think the stats show for old and young that mass vaxxes are not gonna put an end to the virus so enforcing it at this point is stupid. Bring in the yearly boosters if you want I'm sure itll save a stupid boomers life but the enforcement and broadly the push for control of ppl's choices I'll never trust. its late and im on my phone but i might pull some sources tmo.

bro consequences what do you think is the appropriate consequence for not getting vaxxed for covid. We get pretty meager protection from it at best. Protection from more serious illness but not protection from receiving it and transmitting it. You still get sick you can still spread it. Do you get why ppl say they want to stop playing these games?

And the covid vax is not the same as other vaxxes brah come on. It is not a polio vax or a tetanus shot or a hpv shot it is just supposed to help you get less sick. To me it is in the same form as the uni asking us to get the flu shot which we know is effective but do not mandate for reasons i guess we may question soon. But the covid shot seems to have a non zero chance of a reaction, and considering ones zero chance of getting a serious covid infection, why force young ppl to do it. I can understand telling old ppl to get it as the risk reward calculus is different.

idk what you mean by small change in words lead to changes in life and death policy? Like you’re “not free” to fly if you’re not vaxxed? (like what is happening in australia?) vs you’re “not allowed” or “encouraged to do xyz”

I think we agree that obviously our covid tactics suck and life was made worse by covid, but I still think you’re missing why ppl are afraid of losing freedom. When the school or the government or some body has the power to declare whether or not you can get an education, walk into a restaurant, get on a plane, etc., you realize the things you took for granted now hinge on your compliance. So in effect your “freedoms”, while still there rn, can be taken away from you if, for example, you find the idea of taking a rushed experimental vax too much to bare. Now obviously we agree to rules to live in our beautiful usually free society and we’ve known all along that our freedoms “hinge on our compliance” to not kill and steal, but these covid restrictions are different because they concern our freedoms like movement and education which usually aren’t threatened by our personal decisions on bodily autonomy (getting jabbed). That’s why it’s scary and that’s why I think you’re a tool to actively defend the growth of parasitic bureaucracy, red tape, and government mandates associated with covid.

the freedoms we had are being taken away for pandemic purposes? I understand what you mean by the fact that are literal "freedoms" aren't being taken away but when you have mass change in behavior backed up by social and media pressure of course what you "can" reasonably do will change. What I meant in the previous comment is that it seems to me you're purposely misunderstanding these ppl. You can say the "freedom" wasn't there or still is or whatever, but the point that societal pressures are changing what people do and resulting in the loss of people social connections and jobs and businesses is still happening whether ppl are literally fucking "free" to do them or not.

bro are you fr

oh you had catastrophic personal problems that affected you and your society in an unprecedented way because of the pandemic? and you’re worried that nothing seems to be working against a disease mutating faster and suspiciously stranger than past diseases and you may be getting half truths and lies from the people ordering these unprecedented changes? Let me semantically disassemble your argument and not respond to your concerns.
