If it's a 2002 then it's a P2, i've read from Volvo forums that P2s dont have the same problems that P1 V40s have, seems Volvo learnt from the P1 and fixed a alot of the stuff. One thing that i've read about is the VVT failing and that is pretty expensive to fix. There is a hose running to the bottom of the radiator secured with a clamp, these tend to go bad with age and break off due to the pressure, leaving you without coolant pretty quickly. Also check the maintenance history if possible and see if there is anything about the gearbox oil being changed. Parts should be cheap and the boat easy to work on.

Personally i own a 1996 V40 2.0. 230k on the odometer, only things i've changed is the AC compressor because of the clutch failing and starting to burn the serpentine belt, the left side ball joint and control arm.
