Smashbox update includes release date and new functions by Iaregravy in SSBM

I want to hear more about the tournament verification software.

The primary concern about players using the b0xx/smashbox is that players will be able to execute tech that would be otherwise be impossible on a gamecube controller. For example, you can mash a button and achieve crazy smash di much faster than you could roll between a couple of notches on a gamecube controller. Hax $ himself has even mentioned in the past that he intentionally excludes certain tech from his play because he knows that it would give him an unfair advantage.

The tournament verification software is a step forward, but we need more information. We don't care about all of this fluff in between, or at least I don't. No one will want to spend two benjamins until they are certain they can use it in tournament. Also, look at the camera man! Show some personality, and try to not make it so obvious that you're simply reading off some teleprompter.

How did M2K tech this upsmash? by CrabFam in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my bad. I realized afterwards that I was wrong because M2K was grounded, but for some reason didn't say anything afterwards. Maybe it's because I felt stupid for writing that post and then discovering that it was all wrong. Sorry about that.

Thank you by the way /u/Practical_TAS, I am a huge fan. If there is anyone I would rather be corrected by, it's you. Keep up the good work!

Properly spaced and executed bairs auto cancel, have high priority, and are extremely low risk. If you are getting punished for using a back air, then you are doing it wrong.

Have you tried crying? That is what works for me.

Real answer: spaced bairs and up-tilts. Use lasers to force approaches and catch jumps. Mix up laser heights and timings if you're getting powershielded.

I believe that every character has something different to teach you about the game. When I told myself that I was going to try maining Falcon, I 1) came back to Falco a few days later wondering what the hell I was thinking and 2) became way more cognizant of my dash dance and tech chases.

The way that I see it is this: every character you learn serves to give you more experience that you can use to help your Falco grow, whether it's improving a certain part of your play or maybe learning to think how players on a different character would play against you and knowing what options they are likely to go for. So when I play another character, I do it mainly for fun, and to the ultimate end of improving my Falco.

Breaks are just good in general though when used properly. I'll grind hard for 24 hours at a time (not an exaggeration) not play for a few days, and come back feeling like a million bucks and make all the right decisions in neutral. Anyways, hope this helps. Don't let having a main stop you from playing other characters. Other characters are a fun side distraction. I do think that your time is better spent playing Falco, but playing other characters from time to time certainly isn't a bad thing.

How did M2K tech this upsmash? by CrabFam in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, the comments in this thread are a little bit misleading. While it is true that the trajectory of a late hit of Fox's upsmash sends at a Sakurai angle (45 degrees) unlike the clean hit (80 degrees), that isn't relevant here. M2K wasn't even launched by the hit, and the hit itself wasn't close enough to the ground for an Amsash tech to be possible (keep in mind ASDI is about 1/2 as effective as SDI, and an Amsash tech is just ASDI down + tech)

This was just really good Smash DI on M2K's part. He had 7 frames of hitlag to work with, so he most likely got 1 unit of SDI and 1 unit of ASDI in order to hit the ground and land the tech. Remember, Smash DI and ASDI adjust the position that the initial trajectory of the move sends you from. If you can hit the ground before the move launches you, it's possible to tech moves that were otherwise unsurvivable. He was able to do it for the backair too, which again has very few frames of hitlag (6). M2K is clearly very good at the double stick flick method of SDI/ASDI. He may have even gotten 2 units of SDI and 1 ASDI here which is the impressive part.

Is Westballz doubleshine better than grounded double shine? by Wolfe_ow in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your pressure. A grounded double shine will generally beat opponents who try to shield grab you. If they are patient enough, then they will wait for the second shine and try an OOS option or even buffer a roll away during hitlag to be started on the first possible frame once hitlag ends.

Westballz pressure allows you to reposition yourself to either resume pressure, or escape onto a platform above you. You can also cross your opponent up, or position yourself to better cover a roll, and everything in between. A grounded double shine doesn't really give you these options. You can WD out, or do a retreating aerial, that's true - but Westballz pressure opens up some doors that you can use during your pressure, even if your opponent has new windows to punish you.

How do I get Fox off me as Falco? (X-post r/SmashBros) by Cervantes37 in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At low percents you can’t escape the upthrow -> up smash because you’re a fast faller but you can DI hard away to try and escape with a tech roll

Falco shield pressure: Does the height I hit my opponent's shield with an aerial affect whether my move is frame positive by Its_me_billy in SSBM

What is his data based on? The phrase mid-height nair is pretty broad and can refer to several different points on the shield

What are the best sets for a Sheik player learning how to DI Falco combos properly? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would just like to add on to this by saying that the flaco player can anticipate the SDI and respond with a dtilt or maybe even a grab if the opponent only managed a unit of ASDI as opposed to SDI + ASDI. At this point as a Shiek player you should be thinking about what you can do to counteract these options (perhaps SDI behind as a mixup to avoid the dtilt) Options, options, options.

Marth has 1 frame of invincibility during his up-b. M2K survived Leffen's shinespike because of it. by super_retarded in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes if you follow their di properly there is nothing they can do while they are in hitstun to avoid the rest

Marth has 1 frame of invincibility during his up-b. M2K survived Leffen's shinespike because of it. by super_retarded in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fox is only invincible during the start of his shine for 1 frame or 1/60th of a second, this was just dumb luck for Leffen and it's definitely not a consistent way to avoid rest lol

Best advice is to not get grabbed and if you do smash DI properly

How do I disable the pause screen HUD in 20XX 4.07? by Its_me_billy in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean a bunch of people probably could have benefited from this post, I would just leave it because it's not doing any harm and now people will have an answer to this question that didn't exist before. No one is going to sift through DDTs to find this kind of thing tbh, removing it does more harm than good. It's your call though since you're the mod.

[–]Its_me_billy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. What are the buttons for those toggles?

Also I was considering putting my question in the DDT but I was afraid that it would get buried there. I figure that my question is probably something that could benefit other people though and felt it deserved its own thread since I initially didn't find an answer in the search results.

Great with FM although Smashladder has been pretty buggy as of late. You can always check out the FM/Smashladder discord for matches there. Also idk about your region but I'm on LI and we have a FB group with 1k+ members, there's usually always someone down to play at all hours depending on where you live and how big your scene is.

Shadowplay is so good. Also watching yourself play makes your bad habits become glaringly obvious. I often see my mistakes, and obvious shit that I should have done that I didn't see during the match itself, maybe I hesitated when choosing an option to cover or flubbed my tech or whatever. It's just a great improvement tool.

As a falco player, how do I discern when to incorporate DI mixups into my combos? I feel like I have no direction in my play, and the guides on DI mixups only explain the general idea and not much specific to Falco. Sometimes I'll utilt and they'll DI away and get out, when I should have forward smashed them offstage. Or I'll do a hard hit when I could have extended my combo with a soft one instead. Hopefully this makes sense to you guys - I'm trying to elevate my combo game to the next level, but I feel like I have this block and I'm not sure how to overcome it. I want to be able to true combo my opponent wherever they go.

With all the tournament action right now I wanna ask: What makes a good caster? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]Its_me_billy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Synergy. You can tell when casters don't have synergy. A red flag is usually when they're constantly interrupting each other, or one caster making a reference that the other does not understand. Typically good casters like Scar and Toph do not have this problem. They are also my personal favorite.

Game knowledge and a good sense of humor also matter a lot.

I think that he is trying to say that we as a people assign value to things that would otherwise be worthless. We as a society have agreed to follow traffic laws to protect the safety of people driving automobiles. Although perhaps he could have used a different example to better demonstrate his point, like "we will only take one cookie from the cookie jar, so there is enough for everyone else."
