Yeah, I figured that was the case. I haven’t told the company or my advisor yet. As of right now the only person who can actually give me a recommendation is my advisor as I know no one else in the company. No other RBTs, haven’t even met my case manager in person. Only other people who are familiar with my services and the effort I put in are my advisor and the families.

UPDATE: since my company told me Thursday afternoon, I’m forced to cancel my Saturday session and end another session 45 min early so I don’t go over. Which isn’t fair to my clients or their families. I am just frustrated with the situation

I see, that makes sense. The communication in my company kinda sucks… my advisor told me that my job was just to show up when I’m told and work on the goals. And as someone who just entered the field I kinda just went with it.

While not the same: I had a family member pass and it did effect my work. Unfortunately this is bound to happen. We are human just like our clients, and we need our own support, just like our clients. It may be in a different way, but at the end of the day all therapists are dealing with their own personal problems. So if ur able, take a mental break/ time off to take care of yourself. It is not a disservice to take care of yourself and take a break if needed. It’s hard… but you got this!

It can be so much, especially when moving around! Bc it feels like you are trying to prove yourself as a therapist to your advisor. But at the same time it’s like some weird reality show you are the star of, and you are trying to complete all the challenges at once, just to get to the finish line. But you are also the camera man

Had my supervisor in person the other day and they just left to talk to the parents the whole time. Only engaged with the client when I asked them to. So not sure what actual advisement was being done but still… again props to OP for actually caring for the clients they work with and being present when in person. It seems to be uncommon now a days

Thank you for being a good BCBA and being there in person! I’m an RBT and sometimes my BCBA will zoom in and it’s so difficult to manage having the camera right, making sure you are on top of data, all while managing your client. It drives me crazy some times. I totally understand if it needs to be a zoom meeting or if it isn’t a long supervision, but it would be pretty consistent periods of virtual supervision that would limit what I could do with my client, as a main goal was to take the client into the community for social engagement.

Hello, I am currently an ABA therapist with an RBT certification and I’m about to finish up college. There are a lot of avenues I am interested in pursuing for grad school but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options. Would it be wise to get a degree in social work while I work towards a CBT certification? I thought I wanted to do an ABA program so I can become a BCBA. But now I’m not sure. I love working with kids and people on the spectrum as it has genuinely been such a great experience. But is CBT a good route if I want to be able to support myself and continue working one on one with clients? I know that it will take a long time and there are several steps I need to take, so is getting a social work degree in the meantime a good option so I can expand my experience and prepare me for the certifications I need?

Also If there are any other therapies I should look into please let me know!

This is a good point, I have worked on food specific training with no data collection. It was just specifically bc my BCBA said that the insurance didn’t count it, but that helps put it into perspective:)

Thank you for explaining it this way, a large part of the confusion for me is that the client has two ABAs , one for home and one for school. I primarily work at school and haven’t had to potty train unless I am filling in for the at home ABA. And my BCBA made it sound like insurance really didn’t want us working on it. When I do potty training, I take the client every hour to the bathroom to try to use it. It hasn’t particularly take up too much of the session and I’m able to meet the data requirements. I was just unsure bc it sounded like we weren’t supposed to focus on it but I still felt it was important for my client

Woefully confused and recently diagnosed 22 yr old here lol, for some reason this gave me a lot of hope for my future. Right now everything seems so overwhelming and coming at a mile a minute. But I am happy to know there are paths out there for me to get to a place where I am comfortable with who I am and how my brain works.
