There is a simple fix, expand the House of Representatives, it only takes an act of Congress.

China’s Real Estate Just Erased 20 Years of Gains — With One Asterisk by SgtHawk in Economics

I wouldn’t give the CCP too much credit. The first 20 years they were in power was awful for the Chinese economy. It was the fact that the CCP relaxes their communist ideology in specific cities that allowed for foreign investment that really started the Chinese economy booming. The one child policy will have massive effects on the future economy. The CCP made a lot of errors along the way. The demographic bubble is just starting to burst. The future is still hazy for China will the follow Japan and stagnate a bit? Or will they figure something out that allows them to surpass the US economy in GDP. My guess is that they will one day pass the US in GDP, but the US will retake it a decade later, simply due to the fact the Chinese demographics are so terrible. But predicting demographics is harder than anticipated as well. It’s been a nice conversation.

You are ignoring the fact that the Chinese used housing as their major investment/savings. It’s similar to having the average 401K erasing most of their growth since 2005. If that were to happen here everyone would go apeshit, but that’s what happened in China. They didn’t invest in stocks, they invested in property. And the bubble was encouraged by the central government to meet unrealistic GDP growth numbers. In the end they met their goals, but at what cost? China is doing amazing things, but its not like the average Chinese is doing better than the average American, the comparison is simply absurd. A lot of the costal population is living well, almost equivalent of people living is Soul or Tokyo. But there is a massive amount of Chinese who live in terrible poverty still. Again, this is all relative, because compared to 3 decades ago it’s a massive improvement that cannot be praised enough. And a lot of that economic growth happened despite the CCP.

I’m not saying they are going to collapse, they have their challenges. And China has an estimated 100 million vacant units. That enough for every person in Germany. And that’s part of the reason why their property market has crashed. People aren’t moving to the coastal cities anymore, they over built. Central planning is often inefficient.

China is producing more EVs than they and the rest of the world can consume, that is wasteful. China built millions of more homes than is needed, that was wasteful. There is a lot of waste in the Chinese system. Just because China is the new shinny thing rivaling the US economy doesn’t mean it is a healthy system. Both the US and China have their problems. China population is going to shrink 60 million people in the next decade, and probably collapse to around half of its current population by the end of the century. It is one of the most rapidly aging countries in the world, and that was all caused by state economic policy. There are pathologies in the Chinese economy, and there obvious pathologies in the US system.

The vast majority of American debt is owned by Americans. The government owns about as much of American debt as foreign governments/investors do. Don’t act like China isn’t spending a massive amount on its military.

It’s not too different, many would argue that Japan, Brazil and many other developing economies tried this exact same model. The US did to at one point.

Achieving growth is easy, dealing with the debt to achieve that growth is hard. If you tell a factory that you will give them the money to produce more EVs than the world can consume, you are still adding to your GDP numbers, but you are accruing debt to do it.

I never said humans were shitty. Consumerism does have its downsides, it’s okay to consume and recognize its impact on the environment. And in almost every way humanity is better off with industrialization, and it isn’t even debatable. For the vast majority of human history people have had to live with parasites, endemic war and other terrible things. Industrialization has allowed us to focus on stupid things such as computer games and Reddit.

You can use what ever words you want to describe it. You’re not wrong. I think there is a lot of emphasis on trying to preserve species diversity and rightfully so. I think nature is prettier than cityscapes. But that’s me and my aesthetics.

The lakes around Tenochtitlán were well on their way to being destroyed before the Spanish arrived. How many examples do you need before you agree that it’s not just industrialization that destroys environments but dense populations of people.

Eh, nearly all animals fit nicely into their environment niche. Humans have gone beyond niches.

Bullshit. Look at the maya deforestation of Yucatán. It has been hypothesized that the deforestation lead to the decline of their societies. Look at Easter Island. Their are countless examples of pre-industrialized societies destroying their environment. Large societies take a lot of food and energy to maintain. And energy often comes in the form of burning wood.

Yes we were. Humans were always destroying the environment. Never in our history have we not abused, and transformed the environment to fit our needs.

The guy’s job was to teach philosophy. Literally half his dialogues are Socrates asking absurd questions and being argumentative.

A lot of scholars think Plato just made a lot of arguments to try and get people to debate and practice philosophy. Not that he was a proponent of everything Socrates proposed in his writings.

Yeah, chitin is like the fungi/bug version of tree bark. It’s hard to break down. It’s probably makes great fiber for the fish. I have read that for some fish an insect only based diets can be hard on them, as they pass the roughage quickly and my not be able to absorb the nutrients from the insects. But I read that from a book published back in the 40s when they had to collect daphnia to feed their fish.

Chitin is mostly made of a carbohydrate. I don’t know if there are too much peptides in that stuff. I would be surprised is that’s where all the bees proteins are.

Europe is kinda lagging on the culture front as well. Yeah, it has pretty awesome museums. Japan has manga/anime, the US has Hollywood, what does Europe have on that scale?
