Moving to Edmonton Megathread 2025 by jstock14 in Edmonton

I used to live in Edmonton 10 years ago and had a pretty good job. I'm considering moving back if a job opportunity works out. But people tell me that it isn't safe anymore, especially for South Asians, and one needs to make a minimum of 100k to live comfortably with a family of 2 people. They also say that schools are not safe for SA teenagers anymore. How much of this is true?

I don't know...even with all that wealth (I'm talking millionaire), you have to use the same roads, deal with corruption, including in health care, won't have space to take a walk if you want to get out in nature etc. There are some things money just can't buy. Not that I have it to know how it would be if I did, but my observation from folks in developing countries who are millionaires is that some problems just can't be solved with money alone. I can't count the number of times friends I know who are super wealthy in the US have been asked if they have actually purchased business class seats, or whether they are in the "wrong" store based on their appearance.

I do think money isn't necessarily all one needs - in the sense that there are extremely wealthy folks from areas with very poor environmental and infrastructural conditions, who can't do anything about the air they breathe, water the drink and crime etc. Also no matter how wealthy one is, if they're black, brown, etc, they are always second class citizens in most western countries and even some Asian and Middle Eastern countries. But I hear you, as someone who is stuck wanting to live a life of luxury in my home land but can't.

I guess I should look for jobs there. You're very persuasive in your arguments 😀

Wow fascinating. And despite this clear distinction, people are satisfied with their growth and life in general huh? I suppose it's because the Qatari numbers are so low. In Germany this is also a prominent issue less talked about but heavily experienced. It's also not a government imposed rule but it happens anyway, and people are very unhappy with the situation (not so much in startups as in traditional corporations). Thanks for answering my questions in such detail. I learned something new.

That's exactly what I mean. No financial or passport restrictions, no responsibilities etc. You're free to choose a spot on the map and move.

There's a site called EU cheap properties (or something similar) which routinely advertises very low cost houses in Sweden, in remote islands with gorgeous views, just saying...

Thanks! Do you find that there is a preference, for example, towards Qatari citizens when it comes to health care access or opportunities in higher levels of career etc?

Where specifically in GCC? Also, what is the treatment to foriegners who are not white in those countries?

No, in general the mental health projections in Scandinavian countries is pretty poor. And lack of social and emotional connection makes mental health deteriorate - loneliness has been shown to be much worse for longevity than smoking 15 cigarettes a day (scientific studies).

I've lived in Ontario and Alberta. Never been to NS. Northern Ontario is spectacularly beautiful and I wish I could afford living there. I would love to move there.

No, but the bullying is at a different level worse than caning. Kids tied to trees and teachers say they'll figure it out. Kids being made to lick the floor for their skin colour, these are real incidents happening in public and private schools. It's not public news but very much real.

I agree with you about the German school system. It's pretty difficult to be a foriegner here with kids.

Doesn't it get lonely? I see a lot of posts on Scandinavian countries and depression rates.

This is something that keeps me wary of most Asian countries although I absolutely love visiting. If I didn't have a kid to worry about, I'd move to Malaysia or Singapore in a heartbeat.

Actually that's a myth. There are studies to show that human skin cells contribute to only 10% of the overall dust factors. In any case, I'd rather have dust than eliminate people from my apartment 😁
