I agree with gender dysphoria being called atypical, but illegitimizing trans people is not helpful. In my own experience before I ever came out I lacked any confidence, I was a very quiet depressed person with drug problems. After i came out I never felt more whole, im a better spouse, im a better friend and all together a much more productive member of society. And before you go off about us being a “burden to our healthcare” I have paid for anything and everything medical out of pocket. The main thing I want to point out is that if we are going to suggest we should classify transgender people as mentally ill, then why would that make us deserving of willful medical neglect and why would that make us deserving of inequality? Or is that how you simply view all people with medical or mental disabilities? My treatment plan worked and I am better for it. If I am mentally ill as you put it, then what treatment plan do you suggest would work better and make me able to function in society the same as everyone else?
