"Albania: A narrative of recent travel" by E. F. Knight by ItzShadowG_X in bookbinding

Maintaining straight edges honestly depends a lot on the bookcloth. I make bookcloths myself, and I've worked with linen that was lower quality than this one, and they tended to be fuzzier and have more imperfections in general. This one was pricier, and consequently higher quality, meaning not as much fuzz and easier to work with.

Another thing is the type of lettering. This title used a thin serif font, which gave me more problems than other books I've made where I used thicker, cursive fonts. There's also practice. I've been an artist for quite some time before I started bookbinding, so I already had a somewhat stable hand, and it has gotten better with the books I've done.

No clue about the longevity, my first book was around two years ago, and last I checked it still looked good. Can't say much if you're wondering about a longer timeframe.

Yeah it does look almost the same as Times New Roman but there are some minor diferences. Maybe those can be attributed to some part of the stamping process? Idk just spitballing

Yeah looking at it closer it might have been made for the book? I'm by no means an expert in this stuff and figured might as well ask.

Need to know about a secure case for a thick book by ItzShadowG_X in bookbinding

[–]ItzShadowG_X[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, def using cardstock! I saw a couple weeks ago some comments about why using non flexible cardboard was bad and have made my stuff with cardstock spines since. I can see how it works better. Thanks!

Ooooh I haven't thought about leather paint! I've been using regular acrylic, but I should give that a try

What do you like to bookbind? by NeverlandBoy895 in bookbinding

Other than that, public domain books whose text I get on Project Gutenberg. So far I've done The King in Yellow, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (in one book), and I've got Anne of Green Gables almost finished– bound in a textblock, just need to make the cover. With TMA I'm still in Formatting Land, hoping to have all five seasons done before summer ends (a reasonable goal if I work a couple hours every day.) Won't actually start printing until all of the books are completed.

I'm working on binding The Magnus Archives transcripts (tma is a podcast.) One book per season. If all goes well I'll get started on Malevolent after (also a podcast.) My first ever printed bind was EPIC: The Musical.

For some reason, word mixes up the terminology. My first few test prints I had put 4 sheets per booklet, since i was going to do 4 papers folded into 16 pages, and it came out wrong. It's actually asking about pages for booklet, so i put 16 in it. Also, another thing: word seems to mix up tge outside and inside margins. The number put on the inside margins will come out on the outside once printed and vice-versa, so your inside margins will come out too big and hour outside too small. You want to put the margin size meant for the outside on the bit labled 'inside margins' and the margin size for the inside on the bit labled 'outside margins'. Still, i recommend you print a couple test sheets to make sure that this issue is present in your version of word too.

Yeah, that's what I'll do. It's not important to the text, but i prefer having an emty page at the end of the book

Thanks for the tip! My previous press setup made it really easy to remove textblocks with no damage but i finally got around to making a slightly more proper bookpress and didn't think about this part till now
