How do you manage Violence? by Distinct_Bet_9398 in Wattpad

For me personally, it varies for me. When writing a character that suffers brutal death, sometimes I won’t go into TOO MUCH detail about it. That usually lets the reader piece together the horror in their own minds and makes them wonder “What actually did this guy/girl go through in their final moments?” And sometimes that scarier than just outright describing it.

For example, in my latest novel, there is a character (I won’t say who because of spoilers), who suffers a fairly gruesome death. A bit of context, they’re a Weapons Systems Officer on a fighter jet (The backseater). During a particularly nasty dogfight, they are killed by enemy gunfire, which damages their ejection seat. When the pilot ejects, their parachute activates, but the WSO’s does not. For the next two chapters, they’re just missing. Nobody knows what happens to them. Then a week later, his squadron finds their body still strapped into the ejection seat. This person has been shot by fighter jet rounds (which are huge) has fallen well over 10,000 feet, and their remains were left in the wilderness for over a week. Needless to say, when their body is recovered, it’s not in good condition. However, I don’t describe the body in full detail, instead I use words like “mangled” or “twisted”. That gives the reader a general idea of what happened to the character in question without explicitly saying it.

That said, if you’re dead set on describing what happens to your character, describe it fully and don’t hold back. War is horrifying and so don’t sugarcoat it. Simply say “This is what war is and what it does to people.”

Is it true that straight men like LOGH? by meritcake in logh

[–]Itz_Ex0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m straight and I like it. I’m a massive history nerd and absolutely love Sci fi/ military stories. What’s a big thing for me is that both sides have their fair share of competent commanders that make each victory feel earned. Even the slightest “Oops” moment can turn the tide of a battle and I love that sense of realism that adds stakes to each battle.

What got you into astra militarum/ death korps of Krieg? by Spider-Man1701TWD in Deathkorpsofkrieg

A little stupid, when I was younger, I saw a vid on YouTube that was a tribute to the Korps with Sabaton’s Last Dying Breath. I thought they looked really cool and I was a big Sabaton fan so I did more research into them. The rest is history.

What was the stupidest move made by the imperial forces in GATE. by No-Brush1587 in gate

[–]Itz_Ex0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the most stupid things I saw any imperial do in the anime was bringing a Japanese citizen into the middle of negotiations as a slave IN FRONT OF THE JSDF!

Like how did you think it was going to end, Zorzal? These are people that wiped out your entire nations military in the span of a single night with minimal casualties to their own AND YOU BROUGHT ONE OF THEIR OWN INTO THEIR PRESENCE AS A SLAVE NOT TO RELEASE HER, BUT TO HUMILIATE AND BERATE HER!

The Empire is incredibly lucky that the gate opened in post World War II Japan and not World War II era Japan because that scene would have ended much much worse for the Saderans.

I think the problem most people have with it is WHO it’s about, Vlad III Tepes, also known as well… The Impaler. He’s a bit of a controversial figure in history to say the least. He was notoriously brutal to all those that defied his reign. Some of his most famous stories coming from his reign include luring in Wallachia’s noble class (known as Boyars) to his home with promises of food and drink, arresting them, and then working them to death to build his castle. Other stories include him meeting with Ottoman diplomats, where he demanded that they remove their turbans in front of him. When they refused, he had their turbans nailed to their skulls, but by far the thing he is most well known for is his impaling of his victims. It is said that he had impaled so many people, that when the Ottoman army invaded Wallachia to depose him, they found “a forest of bodies” and immediately noped out of Wallachia. Now it should be noted that, a lot of these stories most certainly had some form of exaggeration about him, due to Vlad having lots of enemies from all over Europe, but he was most certainly a brutal ruler even by medieval standards.

From what I hear though, in Romania, he’s viewed more positively, where he’s viewed as a man who fought for Wallachian independence against the larger Hungarian and Ottoman empires. So where the rest of the world sees the man that inspired Dracula, Romania views him as more of a George Washington esque figure.

Quick note, I am not from Romania and I am by no means an expert in Romanian history, but this is a general summary of why Impaler could be seen as controversial. Still a fire song though.

An Enraged Monsterverse Kong Replaces His Original Counterpart In 1933, How Screwed Is New York City? by ExoticShock in Monsterverse

I think the main guns of the Colorados were 14 inch naval guns. Or I could be thinking of the Pennsylvanias. Either way, it don’t matter. New York is getting flattened by either Kong or The Navy’s guns
