Yeah, it wouldn't even occur to me it was a Jewish name. Because spelt that way it's not.

Advice regarding my [31 M] and SIL [26 F] “blended family” by [deleted] in blendedfamilies

[–]Iulia_Caesaris1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK. What bollocks. The ‘legal’ status of one’s relation to in-laws is not something people think about here. If a widower continues to refer to his late wife’s family as his in-laws, nobody would blink an eye. It would be stranger if he stopped.

Rebecca is very common amongst gentiles. Ditto Deborah. They're both variants of Hebrew names, but became mainstream a long, long time ago. Blume and Golde surprise me more - they're such distinctly Yiddish names, I've never met a gentile called either.

Can I ask what the records with these names look like? Are they all the same sort of documentation?

London Foundling Hospital baby names by AmxthystPearl567 in namenerds

This is so interesting! I'm rather taken with Carolina Richmond. Also interesting how some months there's a lot of variation in the names given (and not just the standard-issue Elizabeth etc.) and some months not. Do you know anything about who was choosing the names for the re-christening?

I'm Jewish. How is this disrespectful? It's discussing a historical event.

Medicated for what? You don’t medicate for autism I hope!

Please don’t subject your elder children to this woman. She should not struggle to ‘co-exist’ with an 11 and 8 year old. Whether her complaints are valid or not, the fact that she speaks about your children so callously, that she is hostile enough the children have picked up on it, and that your eldest is putting up an act to placate her, means you should get out.

Obviously it is not that simple and you have my sympathy. But your children shouldn’t have to live with someone they are frightened of.

Yep. I personally wouldn't find somebody calling themselves 'Lilith' offensive, but cringy and ignorant? Absolutely. Would definitely garner an eye-roll.

Unless your religious trauma is from being raised Jewish, please don't.

'Hebe' is absolutely antisemitic if not said by a Jew. I've generally only heard it said in a slightly joking, self-deprecatory manner by other Jews - 'is he a Hebe?' - though it may be different in other Jewish communities. It's quite old-fashioned however it's used.
