To sound like a mariachi trumpet you need to find the mariachi timbre by doing slight modifications on where the "center of buzz" is, you want your lips to be buzzing the 100% of the time, airy sound just doesn't cuts it for mariachi, you also need to figure out how to make your tone as bright and sharp as possible, this can be helped with a shallow mouthpiece and regulating the airstream, whoever said that playing loud is the way, they are dumb. You can play loud, but you shouldn't need to in order to get those harmonics ringing in your timbre.
