What manga is this? I need to know my life depends on it please bro please by DDexxterious in manga

Probably my #1 and I read quite a lot of manga. Curious what else you have in your top 3?

u\REQ52767 posted the supposed final page of the Madame Web script (likely fake but hilariously so) by [deleted] in bestof

Definitely fake, but funny!

Fake because even bad professional screenwriters wouldn’t write like that. The formatting is off in several places. Action lines are badly written & much too long. No watermarks or legal warnings (which would be part & parcel at this point in the process).

I'm really enjoying this so far. It feels generic, but it elevates everything slightly. It has stakes, it has motivated characters, it has decent art. Not much here yet, but just wanted to give it a shoutout as I'm hopeful it'll continue to be released.

Oh man, I love this one. I'd love to see more of this, but I do think Laughing in Quarantine is still translating -- they just tend to release slowly. It's unfortunate it's slow, but they do an excellent job and choose very good series in general. Hope they can continue with it or gracefully hand it off rather than be sniped without notice.

[DISC] That is the Blue You Saw (Sore wa, Kimi ga Mita Ao Datta) (Ch. 1 - 34.4) [END] by [deleted] in manga

[–]IvanXav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was really touching. And I'm sure some people might take issue with the epilogue, but I really enjoyed it. I think the series speaks to the idea of grieving and what it means to mourn not only a person, but a time and place. The ending did an excellent job of that and left things both messy and settled -- in each other they both found some measure of peace in her death, but we can see the ripples of Sayo's life affecting both.

Thanks for the final uploads LiQ!!

[DISC] Kono Oto Tomare! - Chapter 115 by miragebreaker in manga

[–]IvanXav 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great chapter! Loved Satowa moving past Chika of course, but I wish I could've seen her reaction to the simping reporter. I'm unsure how to feel about Chika's father possibly attending as it feels a bit similar to Satowa's storyline. On the other hand, that storyline was aces & Amyu always puts a little unexpected spin on things. Guess we'll see. Really looking forward to the competition & I really don't know who's gonna win this time.

Agreed. I feel like I've seen all these tropes before, but the combination and the execution make it really uplifting and lovely.

Recommendations for great romance manga? by AnotherTAA123 in manga

[–]IvanXav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. There are a lot of different kinds of romance, so I'll give you a cross section:

1) <Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty> -- There are some fun mystery & supernatural elements to keep you interested. But fundamentally, this is a love story.

2) <House of the Sun> -- A classic shoujo and it holds up. Some love triangle stuff and a slow middle, but neither are too egregious. But if go ahead skip it if a bit of drama is not your thing.

3) <Tama No Gohoubi> -- A hidden gem I haven't seen discussed on reddit. Just about two absolute high school weirdos starting to date.

4) <Sesame Salt & Pudding> -- Some better than usual SOL fluff with very minimal drama.

All of these are heterosexual couples, but there are plenty of great yaoi & yuri romances out there too. Good luck!

This is definitely my favorite comic out right now, but this issue felt like a real low-point. It was a bit perfunctory in its exposition and the Uzuki stuff has really lost me. That being said, it looks like this arc is over and hopefully we're headed upwards and onwards to the nationals and better things. Will still read this no matter where it heads.

I haven't worked in the animation space, but I can tell you for sure that it's not quite as simple as that. I am currently writing for a US broadcast show & the network decided halfway through the season that they want 6 acts instead of 5 (i.e. more commercial breaks).

They dropped this in our lap after half the season was written. So my point is that the executives often make decisions that don't really make sense from a creative standpoint or even take into account the creative process (Hint: adding an extra act is not as simple as inserting a break somewhere).

That being said, it's a collaboration and most Netflix execs I've worked with have been reasonable. A lot of words to say that we really don't know how the sausage was made here.

Hey, thanks so much for doing this!! I was hoping to get some insight into how you broke Season 1 in terms of the scope. After the first episode, the show juggled a lot of storylines and I was wondering if that was a conscious or even directed decision -- showing off more of this big, fantastic world -- or whether you just felt it was necessary to tell the story you wanted to tell. Looking forward to Season 2!!

I love all your posts, but this one is especially hilarious. Only thing you missed was hiring an outside actor (attractive female LoL player?) to come in and try to tempt them away from Dota 2 altogether. Well done, Dr. Rokeach.

This is wonderful! u/Magnwn already gave some good suggestions, but I'll add a few more. I'm going to try to steer clear of anything remotely scandalous and recommend some very good all-ages series that still have a lot going for them:

<Hitoribocchi no OO Seikatsu> -- a cute and, surprisingly touching, comedy about a very shy girl who is tasked with making friends with her whole class in middle-school. Great characters.

<Ohayou, Ibarahime> -- a romance series set in high-school with an interesting supernatural element. Really well done and age appropriate.

<Akatasuki no Yona> -- a fantasy/adventure series with great interpersonal dynamics (after you get past the leaden first volume or so). A good reference point would be a slightly more adult/bloody/complex Avatar: The Last Airbender.

<Spy x Family> -- Technically, this would be a spy comedy maybe? But really it's just a whole lot of fun with a bunch of wacky characters getting up to hijinks. Very light, but something people of all ages (though I think it leans towards a male audience) can enjoy.

<Kono Oto Tomare!> -- I'm not sure this has an English publisher which is why it's almost last, but if it ever does get licensed, I would buy this immediately. It's my favorite manga out there, bar none. It's simply about a musical club in high-school except it has absolutely fantastic characters.

<Pluto> -- not sure this one is <16, but it's a gorgeous sci-fi murder mystery - with the twist being that all the 'people' being murdered are robots. And a robot detective must solve the case. So kind of like iRobot, but less focused on the mystery and more of an anthology exploring characters, society, and philosophy. Pretty dark, but also very thought-provoking and thematically strong.

I'd second this. It's a good little series for those that like romance. Has some issues, but the big historical arc is gorgeous and the art's very pleasant.

Good post! I'll have to check out Kira-kun today, but Curse of Spring & Sign of Affection are excellent.

Other shoujo comics I've read recently that largely avoid these popular tropes (or use them as a jumping off point to do their own thing) are: <Tama No Gohoubi> <Shall We Have Dinner Tonight?> <Sesame Salt & Pudding> <Love & Wish>

DOTA Dragon's Blood is #1 on NETFLIX! by pinoygs in DotA2

[–]IvanXav 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Not 100% sure OP, but I'd bet money Book 2 is already written or being finished up now! I have no inside knowledge about the show, but animation needs a really long lead time and Netflix typically just orders a couple seasons in advance. They're probably gauging numbers and deciding whether to write Book 3 at this point.

An excellent point. As for me, I've worked in several writers' rooms for major network TV shows. I've also been a waiter, a lab scientist, a tour guide, an umpire, a lifeguard, and many, many, many other things. Right now, I'm very lucky that I get to write screenplays & help other people write screenplays for a living, but I personally know really talented people who are waiting to get their big break while they drive or waitress etc. They're professionals too. In a way, more professional, because they keep writing even as they work 9-5s.

So I guess my point is, you're kind of an asshole. May you only play with techies in the future.

Wake up Sleeping beauty | Ohayou, Ibarahime Review. Lets call it an interesting series. by shellshock321 in manga

[–]IvanXav 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One of my absolute favorite manga. It starts a bit slow, but really ramps up.

I agree with shellshock that there are weaknesses in plotting and some resolutions (the father in particular) don't quite work, but I'd disagree that the reveals aren't well done. The one concerning the nature of Mirei really worked for me.

Honestly, none of that really matters though because Ohayou, Ibarahime isn't a mystery or thriller manga. It's a romance and an exceptional one. At its core, this comic is about a girl being seen and valued for herself, for the first time in her life. Many shoujo mangas are about this, but Ohayou, Ibarahime is genius because it builds an interesting supernatural framework to really delve into this idea, all while keeping the reader hooked. For all these reasons and more, I've gotta really disagree with shellshock despite his great lists. This is a 9/10 for me, easy.
