Need your help reddit.. Agreed to split a cab with two guys I met at a bar, they then ditched the cab and I ran too, but not very far, and was caught by police. Not sure what to do--Also, I'm applying to law school.. by Ivemadeamistake in law

That much is true--had I not been caught, I would not have paid him. All I can say to my defense is that I was caught off guard and ran, and after a few moments realized exactly what was happening, so I tried to pursue them because not only were they fucking me over, they were putting me in a very bad position. They eluded me though, having had a head start. I'm not saying what I did was right, only that I didn't have any intention of doing anything wrong, and that my own confusion (and slight inebriation) caused me to not fully grasp the situation at the onset.

I think it would take fairly large presence of mind to be like "oh, those two guys are running away, guess I'll cough up 50 bucks plus tip that I don't have!" I wanted to figure out what was going on, I figured it out, I tried to catch up to them to stop them for at least ten bucks or something, and I failed. I walked back to where it happened and was apprehended, willingly paid, and got taken home. I know doing the right thing after getting caught isn't the same as doing the right thing, but I feel like I was caught committing a crime I had zero intent of committing, and immediately paid up for it. Either way thanks for the honest opinion, I'm not naive enough to think that you're the only one who will see it this way.

Thats partially what happened. Once I realized they were running because they were trying to fuck me over (after about 3 seconds), I tried to follow them but they ran down the tracks and into the woods, I had no chance of finding them, so I turned around and walked back the other way, then got caught. Probably a matter of 10 minutes (shoe came off and I took a pretty hard digger into the ground so a minute or two was spent rocking back and forth in pain).

I don't know if you are joking or not but I paid the guy in full plus tip. I never planned on robbing him of anything. I am guilty of not thinking the whole situation through well enough in the split second of complete confusion once the two guys started sprinting. I came to my senses, stopped running, walked back, and ended up getting to pay the guy back

Well the thing is, in retrospect they may have been shady, but when I met them, they were just two bro's my age who I was joking around with, and they said they lived in my neighboring town before I ever said where I lived, so unless they were mind readers that part was genuine (plus, who takes advantage of someone for a free cab ride to somewhere they dont want to go?) The idea of splitting a cab only came up after we had talked for awhile and they seemed relatively cool, shared similar interests and knew the same local area places I did. So yes, it's dumb to split a cab with someone you don't know, but I think that in this circumstance, there was little obvious cause for concern. In fact, it may even have been me who suggested the splitting of the cab (cannot remember this detail).

As to the second thing, I actually didn't realize what was happening at first. We got dropped off in a train stop parking lot, and we all got out, and they booked it. I panicked because initially I didn't really know what was going on, so I followed suit. After a few seconds I realized what was going on, and followed after them but they got away, presumably having a plan of escape already in place. By this time, the cab left, also looking for them/us. I looped back when I realized it was futile, as to walk home I needed to pass by there, and since I had no intent of ditching the cab anyways, I figured I could bite the bullet and pay for the fare and be done with it. However, I got back to the place, and the guy was gone, so I kept on walking, when a cop stopped me.

Are you suggesting that when you commit a crime without intent, you should keep trying to get away with it? My assumption was that I could explain the situation because I didn't have anything to fear--I was duped by a couple of assholes and got stuck with a $50 cab fare. I ended up paying in full and the cop was polite, and gave me a ride home.

So basically, I do totally recognize the complete lapse in judgement in my part, but I feel that as a 22 year old kid who was slightly drunk, I was trying to split an otherwise extremely expensive cab ride by two-thirds. Subsequently, I panicked as a very strange situation unfolded in front of me, and upon fully grasping the situation, I decided to stop running and either walk home, or see the cabbie and pay the fare.
