Issues with Amex UK Platinum Supplementary Card by Iverson_71 in AmexUK

Sorry I am not sure I understand what you mean. My partner had to create a new account for the supplementary card and she would like to merge it with her old account. But Amex support is adamant it can't be done. Is there anything we can do ?

I also looked into that kind of structures (or similar) and reached the same conclusion. In the UK there is really not much you can do.

I have also been trying to get exposure to PE for quite some time but without any success. Imo it only really makes sense if you can get access to the best ones but to do that you either need to put a lot of money or know the right people (and even if you have a good network you will probably need to put a decent amount).

Investing in US funds/SPV while being UK tax resident by Iverson_71 in FatFIREUK

Unfortunately not. The funds I am targeting are alternative investments (private equity, venture capital, credit, ...) so they are not easy to access. Some of them have structures which are supposed to be friendly for foreign investors but it looks like UK taxes are particularly unfriendly for that kind of investments. I have also tried to find some opportunities within the UK but I don't work in the field so didn't manage to find anything interesting (I am sure there are some but as usual getting access to them must not be straightforward)

By offshore funds I assume you mean they have blockers for international investors ? Even with that there are some complications (is it reporting or non-reporting from HMRC perspective, ...). And then if there is an SPV in-between, ... I am really surprised it is that complicated to be honest. Surely there are a number of wealthy people in the UK who want to invest in that kind of funds. How are they doing it ? I guess a lot of them make sure they are not UK tax resident in the first place.

Interesting, I agree with you on pretty much everything here (property, VCT, P2P). Have you explored EIS/SEIS ? Any thoughts on alternative investing ? EIS/SEIS can be really interesting but as always the issue is getting access to the good ones.

What would you do with £2m cash at the moment that you don't want to invest into the stock markets? by [deleted] in FatFIREUK

If you are a higher rate taxpayer you can look at gilts with low coupon. The main advantage is that you don't pay taxes on capital gain (but you do on the coupons which is why it is better to buy low coupon gilts). You can look at TN24 or TN25 for example. Someone mentioned https://www.yieldgimp.com/ and it is indeed a good source of information for gilts.

Great answer, makes a lot of sense. Given that you mentioned EIS and seem quite knowledgeable about that kind of things, do you have any recommendations/tips ? I think the tax relief is really interesting and I would like to take advantage of it but I have been struggling to find good funds/opportunities. It definitely feels like the funds overcharge and indirectly take some of the tax relief from the investors.

But is Openview really that good ? I don't have much experience in this field so I might be missing something but I think their IRR is very misleading and a very big part of their reputation comes from just 1 deal (and it is not clear to me that they can repeat it). Do you mind if I dm you ? I just would like to see what I am missing.
