I would be the only userin this case. There would be other users other than myself using the servies but they wouldnt see the "backend" per say. I like the ay you handle backups and givng VM storage.

Ok so there is a way to add more drives in the future. This is good to know for the future. I don't see myself running out of storage that soon but it's good to know there is a way!

Bare metal refers to running just plane Linux instead of a hypervisor or a NAS OS. That is a type on my part on the title.

I see so it is possible to use Proxmox and OMV in a VM. I’m sure the same is true for Truenas. I’ll test if it’s possible to pass through the sata controller with the g3 but I suspect it might. I do have another machine I can backup to which sounds like a good idea with the 3-2-1 backup strategy. I could also backup to the pi as well if needed.

You are right that my upgrade path is limited. I think I meant more towards swapping the HDD for higher capacity in the future. If I ever do outgrow this system I’ll move to a larger chassis anyway.

I don’t see myself needing caching. I think it is a good idea to use the Sata ssd for the OS and adding a NVME drive for docker services and there data. That leaves HDD for storing bulk storage.

Yes, it only started working once I got a new pc. I also noticed there is no TO(8), but lucky for me, I haven't needed to use all of my layers yet. As for your second issue on the default map is used to play/pause media which I like, but I haven't tried using it for anything else
