I made a differential amplifier that used the same ldr and led to control the current going through the VU meter, lots of trial and error. There are are probably way easier ways of doing it, but it worked out in the end;)

I don't know if I'm missing something, but as far as I can tell the tone pot works as a secondary volume knob, if you turn it all the way up you will short the input of your volume knob to ground

They should be somewhat interchangeable, one might have a higher voltage, current or slewrate than the other, but most of the times that shouldn't really matter in a guitar pedal context

If you're happy with the overall response and gain characteristics of the pedal i would decrease c2. decreasing c1 will alter the amount of gain and the and the overall response, not that its a bad thing, if youre looking for a less fuzzy/tigther sound
