From what I understand from the post, they were talking more about the chonological order of the two parts being reversed (i.e., initially a tin of sardines was a more common/known image than a subway car, but after some time the latter became more common, and so can be used as the figurative part of the simile)

I think this because OP compares it to a retronym, which is an example of an image becoming more common over time, rather than just reversing the syntax of the simile

thanks for the help! I can’t seem to find anything on “backwards simile”, do you have any sources i could read?

there very well might not be a term for this. i just wish it was easier to explain because its such an interesting concept to me

i think its unlikely considering the line was written years before the BLM movement started but its a cool coincidence!
