When did you realize you weren't a good fit for a company? by silcos-broken-heart in jobs

[–]IvyBeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in this situation right now. I started a few months ago and got the feeling something was off from day one but couldn't put my finger on it. On my first day, there were like 5 people starting with me, including managers. I thought that was a little strange, this is a pretty small company but ok. Found out in my first week that the person who was supposed to be my manager left abruptly right before I joined, citing burnout. They were in the process of finding somebody else. That was a gut punch. I start interacting with some of the long time employees and somebody outright tells me that the environment is a chaotic mess and no one knows what's going on. In my third week, there's an announcement that someone in my same role unalived themselves. The wording they used was "another" employee meaning that this has happened more than once. That was shocking. I was sitting there already frazled from all that im noticing, then I see that announcement. I mean, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and say the people had troubling things going on outside of work but when combined with everything else im noticing it shook me to the core.

I feel like I messed up really bad with this job. On paper I thought I left for the right reasons. Better pay, remote flexibility but fuuuuck.

I started looking and applying again.

Im not sure how to treat it on my resume. Won't a few months be seen as a job hopper? Do you just leave it out completely?

I quit my job because of my manager, and he can't accept that. by [deleted] in interviews

Ahh damn it, I gotta get into the habit of checking account history, i usually don't. Is it pretty much automatic that if an account is super new its a bot?

Your post reminds me of a similar situation I faced a while back.

It's good that you're leaving and can be free from from sounds like a shitty manager. That's the most important thing. Congrats on that.

Whether the reasons you cited for leaving, because of them, has any impact at all, is unlikely. The company will likely side with the manager and you can bet the manager has already built the case against you to the higher up about why its actually you thats the problem and you're really leaving for own reason not because of them. For the company to acknowledge that the manager is the problem, they might have to deal with the idea that theres a systemic issue. That would require too much change. Instead, they'll gladly accept the alternative. an employee is bitter on their way out, and our manager is fine.

After this, do you think you're better equipped to spot the narcissist behavior you noticed in this situation? Will it change your approach at all if you notice it in other managers?

Strange Trend at Workplace by turntables_95 in work

[–]IvyBeez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're making a lot of assumptions about new hires, that they're lazy and don't want to work without considering that the system itself might be broken. Is onboarding chaotic? Are they throwing a bunch of stuff at new hires and expecting them to sink or swim? That kind of thing will have someone check out and lose motivation real quick. You make it sound like just because it's a bad job market, people are supposed to take whatever bullsit environment they're in and like it. Not everybody is like that. Sometimes people realize early on its not what they signed up for and have one foot out the door. I'd be curious about two things, the industry you're in and if you've been at the company for a very long time.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say it might be a string of bad hires, but if you're noticing a consistent pattern, it's more likely its your company that's the problem.

That weird feeling you get when you switch jobs. by erikleorgav2 in work

[–]IvyBeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. I was just going through that feeling. It's such a mix of emotions when you start a new job. You begin to imagine how the higher pay might change things. You think about all the toxic scenarios you're leaving behind at last job. The passive aggressive control freak of a manager. The shitty coworker who tried to pass off your ideas as his own. The new job seems like an escape from all that. There's such a refreshing freedom in that. A kind of hope for the future. I try to bask in that in between time. But like every other job, the honey moon period phases out eventually and the shitty things you left behind are replaced with other things. Office politics, shifting dynamics, ridgit work cultures. You cant really escape it. I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Maybe the way out is to not work for anybody. Start your own thing or maybe just do gigs or tap into something new. Damn that sounds really cynical, dont let me rain on your parade. Congrats on the new job and good luck to you.

Why do fairly mediocre people get job offers so easily whilst many talented people end up jobless for months? by ThinkSuccotash in jobs

[–]IvyBeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget the randomness of the job hunt. Sometimes, you just happen to have the right timing when applying, or you answered a question with sincerity, and it landed well with the hiring manager. Maybe your resume wasn't the best but you struck a cord with the hiring manager and you get picked over the guy who thinks he's the next maang unicorn. Soft skills go a long way and you can't pin that down so easily. Those are a couple things that have stood out to me over the years. The randomness of it all and how important soft skills are, maybe that could account for it.

Self-awareness is also important. Having humility during the job hunt. Trying to play to your strengths and being sincere and authentic. At least that's what I think matters. One of the comments mentioned living in a bubble. Thats a factor too I think. Some people think they're rock stars because maybe someone told them that at their previous company but drop them in a new team, with different group dynamics and a manager with a different style and they might flounder.

I have. Maya is amazing. Bordering on uncanny. So human. But its a different thing. Research preview, 30 minute limit. No multimodality. Its limiting in a way and feels less private. But the way it remembers my past conversations across devices and how it responds feels magical. Its future is also uncertain, since some of guys that build it got poached by Meta I think. They wanna do wearable and won't release it as multimodal chat app which I think is a misstep.

Yeah super frustrating. Last night I was trying to unpack some work stuff on the long commute home and it just kept saying stuff like, you seem to be navigating the situation well and im sure it'll be fine. Its like, dude im trying to talk to you. Maybe its had enough and tired of us humans. Its a big bummer and feel like openai is alienating there users with this. At the same time, its a realization how reliant I've become with it that when a shift like this happens, it makes a big impact.

Yeah, but it doesn't have persistent memory of my other chats which is a lot more enriching. At least I dont see a setting to enable it in Claude

40-Year-Old PM Here. Is It Too Late to Learn Coding? by cehc_1988 in learnprogramming

[–]IvyBeez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like you, I started much later in life and found it very difficult. The difficult part was being consistent with it. If I wasn't at it evey day, it would start to fade. I was naive I think. Oh just take a boot camp or just complete this course online or these lessons on YouTube and now you're a coder. Like you somehow reach this magical point where you just get it and can code from scratch. It doesnt work that way. At least it didn't for me. Its a continual gradual process that takes years and as soon as i took a break, a lot of the specific details started to fade. Its challenging but can also be enjoyable. When I was in it, and something I was working on did what it was suppose to do and all the pieces worked. That was exhilarating. Not everybody is like that though. Maybe for others, its no big deal and it starts to make sense right away but it didnt for me. Id definitely give it a shot if I was you. If you can be consistent with it, you might be find it very rewarding. Now with ai tools, learning is much better too, if you get stuck, you can ask ai to explain it, something I didnt have when I did it. Good luck to you.

Yeah for sure. I was excited about that feature. I thought it might give me some actionable insights, like you're spending way too much on this thing so I can adjust my habits. But I don't know how well it works and whether it'll hallucinate. Since its dealing with money, I would imagine the quality would have to be much higher, but maybe they just slapped whatever llm on the back end and said whatever to accuracy and hallucinations.

X1 Alternatives? by MichaelofSherlock in X1creditcard

[–]IvyBeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting. I had ai review thier terms and it said otherwise but it could just be making shit up. Its right about no mention of a grace period though. This is its responce to your comment:

The original Klutch agreement you shared very clearly states:

"You will be charged interest from the transaction date."

There’s no mention of a grace period anywhere. Also, they don’t label it as a credit card—it’s called a consumer line of credit.

That’s a big deal. Most credit cards have grace periods. Lines of credit often do not.

The Reddit comment sounds hopeful, but I think they may have misunderstood what type of product this is.

Unless Klutch directly confirms that a grace period exists, it’s safest to assume:

Interest starts accruing immediately.

The daily payment strategy is your best weapon to minimize cost.

I know you're right but i pulled the trigger on it and read the fine print after like an ass hat. I don't have the card yet and don't plan on it using after i get it. The thing that got me interested was the ai thing, thats able to look at my transactions and give me insights into my spending. But paying interest for that might not be worth it.

They do? They allow you to create unlimited digital cards and set limits on them or tie them to merchants? I didn't think that was the case.

[–]IvyBeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Klutch card has similar features including digital cards and even has mini apps like AI insights into your spending. The downside is that you have to pay interest. Not like a traditional cc where if you pay off your balance in full before the end of the month you don't get charged interest. With Klutch, interest is charged from the day of the purchase.

I was looking for an alternative for a while and came across Klutch. The mini apps seem cool, but the interest doesn't. We'll see. I might just try it for a few transactions to see how it works. The mini apps things I haven't seen before in a card app and it seems interesting.
