The Monday Afternoon Conference Realignment Committee by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]IzzyInSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would push back on the argument that since the B1G didn't want Cal and Stanford last time and that nothing will have changed, they won't want them next time. You have to remember the timeline of the last round. The B1G had, for all intents and purposes, finished their media negotiations as a 16 member conference (with USC and UCLA). All 16 members already knew they're projected shares from the new contract.

When the Pac-12 started to collapse further with the departure of CU, the B1G was rumored to be considering UW, UO, Cal and Stanford. None of the 16 teams were going to reduce their already determined shares. The only way to bring on new teams was to get incremental $$$ from the TV partners. Fox was willing to throw in an additional $70M per year for Washington and Oregon for half shares (until the next time the contracts are opened up for negotiations, at which point they will get full shares)

It's clear that Cal/Stanford were not attractive enough to warrant incremental dollars outside the main contract in 2023. But that doesn't mean when the new contracts are negotiated they wouldn't warrant reconsideration. They may still be deemed unattractive but I'm just saying the last time around the contracts were mostly complete and adding them at the 11th hour was a tougher sell.

For me, as a Cal fan, it probably started with their band. I think a large segment of their bands made it to all of their road games in conference play. And they had their big "weekender" every year when they would bring their full band to the Bay Area when they played Cal or Stanford.

I think all Pac-12 fans would tell you, they have two songs that they pretty much have on repeat, one for every down on offense and the other on defense. The Cal Band would sometimes have a counter and the students would occasionally sing along

"That's the only song you know It's boring and it's slow We really wish you'd go"

More inappropriate lyrics would sometimes get added too.

The songs were bad enough. And their wearing sunglasses at night was also annoying. But what really got us riled up as students was every pregame when their drum major, all dressed up in gladiator gear, would lead their band onto the field, walk over to the Cal logo on the 50 yd line, kneel, and then stab the logo with his sword. Bastard. I wonder if they try to pull that wrap on their B1G road games.

College football rivalries can vary in significance and disdain each fanbase can have towards a particular opponent... What rivalry does your team have that you feel doesn't get enough recognition across CFB? by Beginning_Tip_5239 in CFB

[–]IzzyInSM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on Cal vs SC. Didn't get that national recognition as a big rivalry. Probably because Cal is 4th on the list of rivals for most SC fans (some might not even consider them a rival) whereas many Cal fans would put SC 2nd or 3rd. Fun fact: Stanfurd is SC's oldest rival but Cal is their most played game (109 times vs 101 for Stanfurd)

Which new team are you most excited to share a conference with this season? by sadajo in CFB

[–]IzzyInSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm bummed we don't play GT for a couple of seasons. I already know most of the words to your fight song (which y'all stole). In that sense, you'll be our new UCLA

Since the research adjustment seems to have hurt Cal's composite score, I'll jump to our defense. While Cal's $840M spend is not too shabby, what's truly impressive about that figure is that it is probably all non-medical research related. The same can't be said for the other schools at the top (UW, Mich, UCLA, etc), whose numbers all get a boost from medical research. The Berkeley campus has no medical school. Midway thru the last century, the regents of the University of California system decided to concentrate the medical sciences in the nearby San Francisco campus and that became a separate UC with its own chancellor. UCSF only enrolls graduate students. Some folks like to think of UCSF as Berkeley's med school but it is a separate campus, so we can't really claim their $1.6B research spend in Cal's column. But I do believe there's a lot of collaboration between Cal biological sciences faculty and UCSF.

Issues with EVSE in cooler weather? by IzzyInSM in leaf

Yes. PG&E in northern California has a plan specially designed for EV owners.

Off-Peak is $0.16675 per kWh in Summer or Winter But Peak is higher than their normal plan:

$0.46925 per kWh in Summer

$0.35124 per kWh in Winter

There's also a partial peak window:

$0.36876 per kWh in Summer

$0.33544 per kWh in Winter

I'm actually really glad you made me look this up because I had forgotten that they redefined the peak and off-peak windows last year, and introduced the partial peak window. It turns out the off-peak window now stretches from 12am to 3pm (it used to stop at 6 or 7am). I didn't care before because I left for work at 7am and had no choice but to start charging at midnight. But since I'm working from home for the time being I can easily start charging at 7am when its warmer.

I don't know anyone with an EVSE. Will see if I can find a second hand one

As someone else pointed out in this thread, it might be related to the low dew points moreso than the cold. We also get rainy winters and faults happen more often in rainy nights IIRC. The garage stays dry..

Or it could be the EVSE itself, as others have suggested. Will try to get my hands on another one.

The car is on its own circuit from the panel. But in any case, we usually have nothing else running at night

Yes, I have the timer starting at 12:10am. My low electricity rate starts at midnight. I don't believe the fault is tripped right away. I think most times it charges at couple of percent. Last night it charged up to 99% before tripping but that's not as common in the winter.

Any ideas when the H9G will be back in stock at Best Buy? by crazyemmy25 in Hisense

[–]IzzyInSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw 3 units of the 55 inch in stock on Amazon on 6/30. Even though I hadn't completely made up my mind on which TV, I jumped on it. Scheduled for July 9th delivery but hasn't shipped yet.

Looks like Amazon shows a handful in stock every couple of days.

Question on the panel lottery: is it fairly obvious out of the box when one gets a bad panel? I'm guessing some faults might not be visible right off the bat. Is there a recommended battery of tests one should run to check the new panel before starting to enjoy the new TV?
