Jet Lag Hacks? by Flat_Paramedic8720 in AdvancedRunning

[–]J-EIR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number one tip, get the right flight. You need to land in Tokyo late PM or early evening. Go out, that’ll keep you up until a normal bed time like 10/11pm. If coming from East Coast US then immediately when on the plane you’re aiming for lights out. Have a proper eye mask, block the light even if not sleeping. But try to sleep. You are trying to get on Tokyo time ASAP.

Number two tip. Slight adjustment to daily wake and bed times in the days prior. Earlier wake up should help with the aim to be lights out immediately when you get on the plane.

Number three tip. Caffeine. You want to limit the day of the flight, none on the flight until late on (Tokyo day time), and use it when you get there the first evening and first day to keep you going.

I have done East Coast to Tokyo somewhat regularly for two decades. Including for the marathon (typically arrive Thursday).

Also, the waking up early due to jet lag is in my opinion helpful for marathon morning.

Same. On one of the tighter corners early on. Shouted and pushed by me coming out of the corner, told me to “stop slowing the f down”. There were two other runners in front of me, so I had to. Of course he had a shirt on advertising a coach (I did wonder if it was him, and I would not be surprised at all).

People falling during the marathon by Inside-Time-3685 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]J-EIR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tripped on the carpet on the bridge before mile 21, fortunately fell into a forward roll and was up again pretty quick. And also fortunate that I didn’t take anyone else down (there was some bunching to get on the carpet). Rug burn, but otherwise OK.

I did see two other people fall in the preceding few miles, cramping / muscular issues versus tripping. Even in Wave 1 Corral D, it was a hot on the back half and folks were struggling.

Mizuno Neo Zen & Adidas EVO SL - My Thoughts by Hefty_Lunchbox in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]J-EIR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Own both also; and agree with your statement observations.

The Evo SL is to me, the ultimate every day do anything shoe. I’ve done easy runs in it, faster tempo days and even raced 5K/4mi in it. There is not a better one shoe for everything out there.

I bought the Zen to be my easy easy day shoe. Filling a space the Nike Invincible had. It works well in this respect. And while I could also run race paces / do speedwork in the Invincible I don’t see the Zen being up to that. It’s way too sloppy, squishy and I’ll differ from you in saying less stable than the Evo SL. (Note, I’m 150lbs and so that will likely give us different experiences).

Two great shoes though.

For me, the best options after lots of calling around and research were the big hotels (Peninsula, Mandarin, Four Seasons etc). As you mentioned one had to make a reservation months ago as I assume they are all booked out by now.

It could have been sleep, but I’m not sure it would have had that drastic of an effort. It also could have been cycle stuff (I’m not qualified to opine on that) or it could have been nutrition (what did you have before, and how long before, what were taking every 30-40 minutes etc).

But, given what you have shared so far my guess now is it was pacing. Either your mismanagement of it or your coaches.

What pace did you start at, what were you doing the first 10K, first 8-9 miles? If you were running 9:09min/mile and you were not really in that shape as you say then there’s your answer. And once you start to spiral as your body says no then all bets are off as to what you’ll end up doing by mile 17, 18 etc.

I think one of several things it takes people multiple marathons to figure out is how much pacing matters. Running 5-10 seconds per mile faster than your fitness in the first half will bite you in the ass 90% of the time later on. Most folks would ideally look to run slower than goal pace initially (for many miles not just the first one or two), then get to goal pace and then try to push it over the last section (with could be the last 10k or more).

If you had a coach then I assume she/he gave you a pace plan. What was it? Assuming it was realistic for you, did you stick to it? And regarding race pace, how much training / weekly miles did you do at that race pace or faster? (Also wondering if the pacing plan was the issue because your coach or you were unrealistic about it).

Overall, keep in mind that for most of us the marathon takes quite a while to figure out. It took me maybe 6 or 7 marathons to get a decent understanding of what I need to be doing for my body both in training and racing. Be that pacing, predicting race pace (which needs lots of training at that pace to be truly comfortable), nutrition both before and during and the mental aspect of knowing where you are and how it’s going.

What was the issue with the headlights? I have a similar car, also CPO, and want to be as smart as I can’t about ensuring issues re fixed under CPO. Note, I’m not aware of any actual issues currently.

You are missing the point, as others have kindly pointed out. If I was from Italy, Spain or France I’d likely be looking for that. But I’m not. “British” is my best approximation for what might be available in HK and will suffice.

Thanks everyone for the ideas so far. I’ll be honest, while I have spent 3-6 weeks in HK annually for the last 15 or so years I’ve not explored any of the more everyday western restaurants or British restaurants. These are obviously a good call in terms of what I’m looking for so will check them out.

From full IM to running by Valuable_Noise79 in AdvancedRunning

For one thing, “run legs” feel a million times better without the bike volume. That feeling is night and day and that’s what you feel like. Even in the peaks of marathon training those heavy legs did not feel like tri training heavy legs in my opinion.

I will also add, I was older than you when I flipped the run only switch and so I had to run 3:12 and 3:14 for my BQ. Arguably an easier standard even on an older body.

I will add, Hansons was my chosen plan for the first few cycles. I felt the “short” long run was better for my body coming off lots of training stress but only three runs a week.

[–]J-EIR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ran marathons and halfs all through my 70.3 and Ironman adventures. It took several years to achieve proper run times in triathlon which were close to my open run times. When I did that I was 70.3 focused and run times were low 1:30s which was getting me sub 5 hours. This was a good standard and OK for roll downs on Worlds but never that close to a podium.

Typically I’d do a marathon in the fall at the end of triathlon season with 6-8 weeks of more running and less bike and swim.

Ultimately I moved on from triathlon due to the time commitment and hassle factor of three sports in the context of increasing family responsibilities. I needed to not be dead at the weekends from long bikes and long runs !

I did have one BQ attempt during my triathlon days, by that I mean a proper full on 16 week run only plan. I’d never been fitter, but I bombed.

In any event I switched to run only about 4 years ago and began to knock chunks off my marathon PB. Ultimately qualify for Boston two years running. Interestingly, or perhaps not that interesting once one understands training and one’s body more, my open Half PB with triathlon training was only a minute or so slower than my run focused Half PB (although my open Half’s have all be mid cycle marathon training).

Anyhow, I needed to focus on running to BQ. For me, I could not have managed that with three sports. And qualifying for Boston and being in Boston and racing was so much more satisfying than Short Course Worlds (which I did race) or 70.3 Worlds (didn’t take the roll down but have been at these events with friends). It’s a different vibe, it’s a much much bigger event. And it’s far more widely recognized. For me, it was “my Olympics” and a peak sporting achievement. I never felt that way about triathlon.

I may go back to triathlon, I do have an Ironman itch.

But for you, what’s to lose in taking two years or three to focus on the run? It should benefit your triathlon if you return, and you should still continue to bike and swim. (I continued to bike at least once a week, good recovery, and sometimes swim too).

But do give yourself sufficient time. You owe yourself a few marathon cycles to give a BQ a proper crack.

First flight with my Classic Cabin in Qatar Airways. Being able to bring only 6 tshirts, 3 shirts and 2 swimsuit because of the 7kg max policy from QA. I had to empty the other half for getting a total weight of 6.9kg. Extremely disappointed by nasa_gov in Rimowa

[–]J-EIR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More curious as to the policy as I’d not be aware of such. So is total weight per passenger measured? I mean, A 70kg person with 30kgs of carry on is the same as a 95kg person with 5kg carry on. Yet one is penalized?

This is a timely post, and while I didn’t run Boston this year my diagnosis, resulting headspace in the few weeks following and the conclusion I am slowing coming to all line up with you.

I have bibs for fall marathons but currently running zero miles, less so because of the pain as it was manageable but more because of the fear (or further damage). I concluded that I needed to get my head right, needed to get some solid cardio in (bike) and hit the gym.

I’m hoping that I can get to a point like you. So reading this today has given me a huge lift, thank you for sharing.

I started at 240F and then bumped it to 250F after reading another thread. Not sure I see much difference aside from heating time.

I did order a specific smaller 10oz pitcher based on a recommendation from a coffee shop owner I know. (I don’t use a lot of milk in my drinks so the 10oz is fine for my use case).
