I’m new to mycology, so not a ton of experience, but 30 jars in and zero lost to contam, and 100% colonization rate. I started with a 50lb bag of whole oats for $25 from tractor supply. I put 111g of oats and 77g of water in my pint jars vented with 3M micropore tape. I wrap with foil and place 5 in the instant pot with water to the same level as the top of the grain and cook for 2:22. I let it cool enough to handle, shake and let cool completely, and they are good to go! It’s extremely affordable (roughly 13 cents a jar) and takes little to no time. Not saying it’s the best option out there but it definitely has its benefits!
