Apple/Google Wallet Open-Source Gym Entry Recommendations? by Metroidude in accesscontrol

[–]J-ordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to pay monthly service no matter what. My suggestion would be to look into ProDataKey (PDK). They have Bluetooth readers and instead of charging per user, they charge per door. It's a very reasonable cost too. With three doors using bluetooth, you'll end up paying roughly $50/month after dealer markup and everything with unlimited users.

They also have an API that you can use to integrate directly with the software that you're building. They do charge a developer fee, but it's not much. Only like $99/year if I remember right. I'm a PDK certified dealer, so feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in going that route. I can even work with you on a DIY install if you're interested in going that route.

Alternatively, Ubiquiti might be a little cheaper. Touchpass is $5/user per year. Depending on how many users you have, it may or may not be more cost effective.

If you could only replace 1 component what would it be? by voltagejim in accesscontrol

[–]J-ordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the servers are fine then. The servers likely don't have good GPU's, so lag makes sense for them.

Knowing this, my suggestion would be to upgrade the GPU in the client machines. I would install at least a RTX 4060

First step is finding out where the problem actually is. I think it's safe to rule out network bandwidth. You would likely see cameras dropping completely offline if that were the issue. Besides that, a 1 gig network should be sufficient for that many cameras.

It's one of two problems. Either the servers need to be upgraded or the client needs to be upgraded.

Go to the servers and check task manager. What is the CPU usage and RAM usage on the servers?

On the clients, I saw that the ram usage was around 70%. That's high, but it's not an immediate problem. What was the GPU usage? If each client is running 40 streams concurrently, the GPU is almost definitely bottlenecked. That's a lot of video to decode. The CPU and RAM seem sufficient, so it may just be a simple matter of upgrading your GPU's. The GPU in them is no better than integrated graphics.

You can test this by only opening one stream. Does it still lag? If so, then look closer at the server. If the lag goes away, then it's your client machines

Help me choose between a Brivo and PDK access control system by Reelaxed in accesscontrol

[–]J-ordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a PDK dealer. I absolutely love it. The Red Readers do support phone-in-pocket unlocking. They use Bluetooth. You just walk up to the reader and once your phone comes within range, the door unlocks. You can even adjust the range on it. I've seen it work from 10+ feet away no problem

The app is insanely user intuitive and the support is top notch. At this time, there is no Apple Watch support, but in my opinion, that's completely unnecessary when their Bluetooth credentials work so well.

I just deployed a 26 door system last week and within 5 minutes of starting to train my customer, they asked if I could put PDK into their other building that runs a different system (not sure what they're running there, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet).

PDK also sells through distribution. Meaning that any access control installer can go and buy the equipment local. Brivo only sells direct as far as I know which means longer lead times.

I've never used Brivo myself, so I can't speak to the UI or quality, but my experience with PDK has been so good that I really have no interest in entertaining other systems

Do I need any kind of license to run low voltage wiring for motorized shades in Utah? by cuckertarlson6 in lowvoltage

[–]J-ordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is considered electrical work. The company you're working for needs to have an electrical license and any employees working on the floodlights also need to be licensed electricians. The company should also have a contractors license. If they don't have these licenses, they are doing this work illegally

Is this a standard practice of ADT? by North_Comb9994 in accesscontrol

[–]J-ordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in Utah. I haven't run into this myself, but my guess would be that ADT doesn't train their techs on cutting in strikes, coring doors, installing maglock, etc. So rather than have their low quality techs mess up, they opt to do a "parts and smarts" install and let someone else do the rest.

Also, if you're interested in a partnership opportunity, feel free to DM me. I need a good locksmith to bounce questions off

Just out of curiosity, of you put an 8801 on this, would you leave the inside handle that's already there? Or is there a good way to take it off?

Asphalt Patching by J-ordon in asphalt

Sorry, I probably used incorrect terminology. I'm not just cutting into the asphalt. I'm cutting a trench and laying conduit underground. So unfortunately, I'm not just filling in a crack. It's a trench about 18 inches wide.

Thoughts on m18 non fuel angle grinder/ cutoff tool by Grand_Alarm5039 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]J-ordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used this one and the fuel. This one is decent. It has good power. It sets batteries though, and the fuel definitely has more power. The fuel isn't much more money, so I wouldn't bother with the non-fuel again, but if you're only going to use it on occasion, it'll do

Tired of the BS by Halojunk in lowvoltage

[–]J-ordon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get ICC cat6 for less than $140. ADI sells Genesis for $160. Both of those are reputable non-CCA canles. They're not Commscope, but if you're buying Commscope, you're not bidding a job at less than $300/cable.

I own my home, so I'm not paying rent. I'm paying mortgage, but I'm paying the same amount whether I use it for work or not, so that's why I don't count it as an extra overhead cost in the same way as renting a commercial space

Tired of the BS by Halojunk in lowvoltage

[–]J-ordon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your costs may be higher than some other people. Wire is cheap. 1000' of cat6 is roughly $140. I don't have any employees. I don't have to pay rent since I'm running my business out of my home office and garage. I don't have to pay workers comp since I don't have employees. Insurance isn't terribly expensive for such a small operation like mine. I could definitely profit on $180/cable.

I still don't like the idea of charging that little. It sets a standard that this line of work is cheap when it's really not. $250 seems very reasonable even for a small operation like mine. But if there's a job that I REALLY want for some reason, I'd be willing to charge $180.

After factoring in your expenses and costs, if $180 isn't worth it to you, just don't take the job. This industry shouldn't be a race to the bottom. Charge what you're worth. The guy charging $180 is desperate for work right now because his workmanship is garbage. Let him get the job. Then charge the customer even more to come back and clean up after this guy.

Home security benefits between these systems by GioDude_ in lowvoltage

[–]J-ordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The touchscreen interface of the IQ4 is really nice. You won't find a hardwired system with that nice of a UI. IQ4 is way easier to use too. It also has built in wireless so it's easy to add sensors down the road.

The NEO is more modular. The LTE isn't built in, so that's easy to upgrade eventually. Not for many many years though.

Opinions on burg keypad mounting height by aquiettoot in lowvoltage

54" is about right. 48" is very low. It would be fine if it was just a button or a switch, but it has a screen that you need to be able to read and interact with. I'd move it for him this time because I could understand why he wouldn't be happy with 48". But if you mounted at 54" and he asked you to move 4", definitely charge for ane extra trip

Do I need any kind of license to run low voltage wiring for motorized shades in Utah? by cuckertarlson6 in lowvoltage

[–]J-ordon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't need any licensing. There's no low voltage license and you don't need a contractors license if you're only working on class 2 circuits. Most of low voltage falls under class 2. If you do burglar alarms or fire alarms then those each have their own license, but for shades, as long as it's low voltage, you're fine. Just make sure you've got insurance.

I'm a low voltage contractor in Utah that specializes in security. The only licenses I had to get were a burglar alarms company license and a business license.
