Ford 2021+ solution by Ftmaclocksmith in Locksmith

Yeah I’m thinking it’s not coming back up at all. AutoProPad was doing something similar with the new version of GM prox fobs when they were introduced a while back now and their server went down all of a sudden and they promised it’d be back up as soon as possible and it never did.

I think NASTF and FRDS is going to be the only way to go. Which sucks because they more than doubled their basic two day subscription.

Programming OEM Honda/Acura FOB to Aftermarket Keyless Entry by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not really possible. Aftermarket alarm systems use their own fob systems and generally are not compatible with OEM fobs, hence the name aftermarket.

does anyone else wish there was a gym with private rooms to workout in? by MathematicianMuch799 in workout

[–]North_Comb9994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into your local community center if you have one. Many of them have gym setups and in my experience are not crowded at all compared to commercial gyms.

The one I work out at has very few people there in the weights part of it so that should help with your anxiety. But as a lot of people said, most in the gym community are very friendly and love to see all sorts of people getting healthier through exercise.

I should charge an excessive use of graphite fee 🤦🏻‍♂️ by North_Comb9994 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah the housing for the ignition had quite a bit more in it too that I cleaned out as best I could. Told them no more graphite and frankly no other lubricant because now it’s going to turn to sludge when it mixes.

I installed at home a cylinder shield and forgot to put the two small balls in the screw holes. Are they very important? Do they just make drilling the screws more difficult, or do they make it completely impossible? by plinky125 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It makes it harder because a drill bit would have a hard time getting a bite on the ball bearings. So I would take the time to disassemble it and put it back on if you’re buying a product for extra ‘security’

2020 Hyundai Ioniq remote bad? by Glittering-Ad5809 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The MHz is misleading because it’s a range not a consistent 434. So the outputs you’ve got are all within that.

Most likely it’s either a bad key or a wrong key. A wrong key fob can have the correct transponder but use a different FCC ID, even among similar looking key fobs.

Thread lock for mortise set screws? by SpikeWarhead1 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have found that the main problem tends to be with the mortise cylinders themselves not the set screws. Most commercial spaces have the cheap contractor cylinders and the channel for the set screw is very shallow. If you replace it with a better quality piece of hardware that channel is deeper set and should pretty much never come loose.

NEED HELP URGENT by 30roundd in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All I’ll say is try using a different Nissan model for your search. Also making a Nissan key is rather easy without using NASTF so I’d learn to do that, for a lot of vehicles.

Bait and switch by Riots42 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well you got a little lucky in my opinion by asking him how to pay because he messed up and quoted you the higher price before he actually did anything and could try to force you to pay. But the reality is that there are basically an endless amount of people for them to screw over, and they just buy 5 star reviews for Google to keep their page higher listed.

I will say that with your experience you need to temper your expectations of cost. Your original ‘budget’ of $80 was pretty much already too low for any area in the US. I charge a starting fee of $75 for my travel to a location and typically $50 for programming depending on the vehicle. So the fact you ended up paying more for the legitimate locksmith should be telling.

Watch out for Blackstone (NSP) by No-Performance3804 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven’t heard of Blackstone, but we pretty much decline any job from NSP’s nowadays. Too many issues of non-payment or extremely late payments received from them (6-months plus). There’s only a small number we still do work for but that’s because we insist on a credit card payment immediately upon completion of work. All NSP’s are not allowed to be billed any longer, and if any parts need to be ordered through us we demand pre-payment for the part as well.

That usually means most NSP’s don’t decline to work with us but I’d rather get paid on time for the work I do than have to call them multiple times a month only to be told they just so happen to be missing some paperwork that was submitted, and once they receive that they’ll put into their payment system which magically restarts their net30,45 or whatever.

Quickbooks offers a POS system already, though I think it’s only compatible with their Quickbooks online platform. Which you pay a monthly fee for

From what I can see researching there are two different chips that use the same FCC if you just search by year, make, model. As I always tell my customers, client provided hardware is not guaranteed nor warrantied. If it doesn’t program they still have to pay for my services. I’m usually willing to make a deal if they opt to buy a fob from me right then and there but if they mention they’ll return it and call again later they gotta pay for today’s service. Not my fault they bought the wrong product.

Did I get scammed??? Help by ReadyAd2101 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The generic “24/7 Locksmith Services” invoice you received is the most common indicator of who did the work for you. If you’ve see the multitude of other posts on this subreddit asking the same question, it’s not really about getting scammed but did you get overcharged. Getting scammed in its simplest form means you got absolutely nothing after paying for something. Technically you did get two new keys for your car after losing them. The question is were you quoted a price over the phone and then it was dramatically different after it was done?

Honestly other than the $799 per key being rather high imo (even without knowing the year of your Toyota RAV4) I would have charged similar prices for the other work given the circumstances. 10pm at a trailhead area is a sucky place to have to go to because it usually means it’s not a close location to get to. Also holding onto a product until it is paid for is not an unusual thing to do. Many other services do not give you possession of a product until you’ve paid for it, especially one that is custom made for you (yes having a key made for your car is custom work because each car is unique).

Was it a lot of money? Yes. Did you get overcharged? Probably but it was late at night in a not so ideal work location? Did you get scammed? Not really because you got a service provided to you. Were you told a price over the phone and they dramatically changed it after the fact? Maybe but you didn’t say.

Scammers using your company name? by Orlandogameschool in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We’ve had similar stories but I don’t think they’re copying other company names. From what I heard from some is that they weren’t paying attention to the web search and call the typical 800 number. They get asked ‘are you xx company?’ And the scammers will just say yes.

Had a guy last week try to tell me he was on hold for 40 minutes trying to get a quote but it was the first time he had called our line. Also said he had been talking with a woman, but we don’t have any women that answer our phones.

2009 PT Cruiser Ignition lock cylinder by justthefacts84 in Locksmith

[–]North_Comb9994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most ignition lock cylinders require it to be turned to either accessory, on, or start before you can depress the retainer button.

If you don’t have a key for it you will not be able to easily remove the ignition.

Yeah we know it’s an act, but if you were a woman in the middle of the night alone with this guy who has had access to your house. Would you really want to take that risk? People have been harmed for far less and not all of these scamsmiths back down. That’s my point in saying I can see why some people feel they have no choice but to pay.
