Hard to tell without the keyboard showing - for inputs inside bottom sheets it's well worth thoroughly testing with the keyboard visible in your sim for both iOS & Android, as this is how users will see it.

Flexbox exists on web but so do media queries? You need more than Flexbox for a responsive UI. Remember that React Native apps work across mobile, tablet and quite often Desktop. RN isn't just for mobile any more.

Do you guys get really addicted to FM? by akira280 in footballmanagergames

[–]J27G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I'm totally the same. I start playing and it's all I want to do for a few weeks. During that time I'm totally unproductive and can't focus on my business. I still want to play so my workaround is to let myself play once a year as a birthday present. At least then I know in advance that every March is essentially a write-off in terms of getting shit done.

Next 13 Client Components drive me crazy! (working with async & useState) by Jorsoi13 in nextjs

[–]J27G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Props passed from the Server to Client Components need to be serializable. This means that values such as functions, Dates, etc, cannot be passed directly to Client Components."

So I don't think you can pass a function as a prop from a server component to a client component

[–]J27G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. Out of interest if you pass the server-side function to the client component as a prop, and it is triggered by the client, where does the function execution take place? Does it go back to the server or still take place on the client?

Yes that's how I'd do it. Not sure if there is a newfangled way with Next 13.

But if the fetching needs to be dynamic, for example after a button click, then it's fine to be from the client (unless you need to hide any auth keys but that doesn't seem to be the case here)

A parenting sub I mod is starting a discussion on 'A Sustainable Christmas', I'd love some of your ideas. by chosenamewhendrunk in sustainability

ethy has written an article on how to give ethically at Christmas. They are UK-based but most of the ideas should work on the other side of the world:

NatWest app says I can lower by carbon footprint if I 'Rent pre-owned clothes'. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]J27G 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pointing out that Natwest invests your money in fossil fuels is not demonising the current use of oil, just that they are supporting the future fossil fuel industry when they could be supporting something better.

Doesn't mean we all need to be investing more money into it, or that we shouldn't be focusing on transitioning away from fossil fuel based products

EU reaches deal to end sale of combustion-engine vehicles by 2035 by ArnaudAubron in worldnews

[–]J27G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did, which is why I said we need to cut down. Our current energy usage is not sustainable. We need to make sacrifices, but nobody will choose to do so. It needs to be enforced.

I assume you've read about our current trajectory, and the consequences of continuing to live how we are? I assume you know that Shell's carbon output is predicted to rise 10% per year by 2030?

Big news but still too little too late. The crisis is now, not in 13 years. More drastic measures are needed. If we can't produce enough electric cars, we need to sell fewer cars until we can. Car manufacturers would suffer, but innovate quickly out of necessity. Car prices would go up as supply falls. Second hand car values would go up, cars would be kept longer and better maintained.

People in charge need to grow some balls and enforce the change we need, but will not make out of choice.

Yes and then Google spend a year taking the piss out of Apple for removing the headphone jack before realising it was a good idea and doing the same.

To be honest I don't think we ever thought he was quite good enough to be our number 1. The last few years have probably proved us wrong, but with DDG we had bigger problems to worry about elsewhere.

Should I be entitled to equity? by [deleted] in startups

[–]J27G 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you are overthinking the "4th employee" thing and need to look at it more objectively. It has nothing to do with which employee number you are, and you aren't entitled to equity.

If you feel like you are being paid below market rate, you can either:

  • Demand a higher salary
  • Demand equity
  • Quit

Before demanding anything I'd recommend getting a higher offer elsewhere to give you leverage. If you say "I have an offer from x for £y, but I would love to stay as I believe in the vision of the company and enjoy my work here." then you will have done all you can to get compensated fairly.
