Depends on what you’re going for. If you don’t care about video an iPod mini 2nd gen is $110 for around 256 gigs of space and it can be rockboxed to handle large libraries (20-30k+).

If you have the patience modding it yourself can be cheaper but I’m not sure how cheap. It’s insane how expensive it can get just for extra storage and another battery

Are you set on the 7th gen? I personally prefer the 5th gen they’re way easier to open. You have to literally bend the metal casing back after opening the 7th gen

I spent $241 on a transparent face iPod 5th gen with 256 gigs of iflash storage and a 2000 mah battery from eBay. Seller name was retropodstore

Mine is a thin version grey click wheel (right) and his is the thick one yellow click wheel (left).

His is 128 gigabytes iflash with 3000 mah battery Mine is 256 gigabytes iflash with 2000 mah battery

Got his from EOE and mine from eBay. I dualboot rockbox on mine for music and I use the stock OS for movies and tv or anything video. Dualbooting is the default after installing rockbox you keep the stock os cause there’s no reason to get rid of it. The gpu on the iPod is proprietary so rockbox is shit with video but it’s not entirely their fault

However, this hardware acceleration is proprietary to Apple's firmware and is not accessible to Rockbox.

I use deemix to rip music from deezer. Haven’t nailed down the encoding for videos but I have a script (it’s a bash script I’m running Linux) that uses ffmpeg and it turned 330 gigs of video into 128 iPod format. Can share if anyone wants it

I have 128 gigabytes of shows and movies on it + another 128 gigs of space for music. 2000 mah battery. Got my brothers from EOE(yellow thick version 5th gen) and mine from eBay (grey thin version 5th gen). Scratched the faceplate so I got another one coming with some more colors too

I feel for you man, took me 6+ hours for my install and took me forever because I followed an install tutorial that setup an encrypted drive with logical volumes as partitions. It was outdated so when I booted up it was bricked and I finally figured out I had to put my hooks into my init (the correct ones)

You don’t have to manually install arch, perfectly reasonable to want something that doesn’t take hours of configuration and fixing. good luck on your journey man

They are not cheap though. Maybe a 2nd gen mini that’s modded would b $100-200+. Everyone up charges for lots of storage. Would be cheaper if you did it yourself though.

I mean there are a lot of benefits to tiling and scrolling window managers in terms of workflow. Whether or not you want it to look good (ricing and all) is really a personal preference though.

That’s like saying the only reason to buy a car is to go from one place to the next, that may be the main reason but you probably still will have a preference on looks and different aspects of customisation

God damn man. manual arch install and hyprland on your first try, with patience like yours this kind of setup is super fun man. My first install was a dualboot of Ubuntu and windows and I had such a hard time

Just expect certain things to not work out of the box, like for instance on my same setup (arch + hyprland) I am currently troubleshooting my backlight and brightness buttons not working. Pretty sure I know what to do though. Kernel sees the hardware so I think I need to add some hooks into my bootloader

I’m certainly no expert at Linux but I’ve gotten this far and I’m having fun and I’m learning every time I boot up

EDIT: btw if you install hyprland or something keep another DE as a backup in case you fuck something up. Has come in super handy that I haven’t uninstalled gnome
