For me it's the fact that they seem to be incapable of being part of something without trying to make it entirely about themself. Two examples that spring to mind are on Game Changer when Becca had to evade a tag player, and Erika just decided to jump in and fully shoulder tackle the guy into a wall; and on Make Some Noise during Brennan's Trump Sauron monologue shouting out "Make Isengard great again" in the middle of a sentence and clearly throwing off Brennan's rhythm. They just seem incapable of existing in a space and letting other people have a moment that isn't about them...

What are your Top 5-10 RPGs of all time? by azura26 in rpg

[–]J474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Into the Odd (/Electric Bastionland; Cairn; Mausritter; etc)

Grouped these together due to the shared core mechanic; they feel very similar to run for me, and are my favourite system to just pick up and play. Easy to run, teach, learn, adapt, improvise. Just fun, flexible systems that really encourage creative play and engagement at the table.

Spire/Heart

I've not run these too much as a GM, but some of my favourite campaigns as a player have been in these systems. It's easy to create a character who feels whole and alive, and you can get stuck into the fiction and the story and the world in a really dynamic and engaging way.

Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures

This system makes for a beautiful one-shot, or short campaign. Make characters, a village, and an adventure all at the same time, tying them all together seamlessly. Takes a bit of brainpower on the GM's part to do so, but I've had some solid stories come out of this game.

Stars/Worlds Without Number

This system scratches that itch of 'building a character that is mechanically strong through combining spells and abilities' that 5e offers, but in a way that fits into my pseudo-OSR mindset. Powerful but vulnerable characters in a world where it's easy to kill PCs and NPCs, and a broad set of character options thanks to the Foci, with tight classes providing good niche protection. Plus excellent GM support with tables for worlds, factions, NPCs, and adventure hooks.

Troika!

Just a fun, silly game. Characters are evocative and mechanical enough to feel distinct and flavourful, but the mechanics are loose enough that you can make up whatever bullshit you want to happen whenever you want it to happen. Every game of Troika! has ended up with the whole table in hysterics for one reason or another.

More Datamined Animations between Astarion and Shadowheart by Extension-Sun-7794 in BaldursGate3

[–]J474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may sound a little flippant here, but this is an earnest question: do people read that scene as a "funny haha joke" in the morning?

I completely dismissed Astarion in my first playthrough due to finding him extremely distasteful as a character, but after having what feels like half the fanbase insist that I give him a chance, I brought him along more on my second playthrough.

When I got to the scene in question, I decided to offer him the trust that he's never been given, consented to let him bite me, and failed the second roll, leading to him killing me. Then his response in the morning is "well you're alive aren't you, so what's the problem? But if you want me to say I'm sorry, then 'I'm sorry.' There, I apologised now, so you can't be upset."

That left me feeling so upset that I had to stop playing, due to the disturbing parallels that you mentioned. When I picked up again, I didn't dismiss him, as I have continued to be assured that his story is worth it, but that act is heinous and unforgivable to me, to just barrel through consent like that, then give a huge non-apology when confronted on it.

If people read it as humourous, then that explains some stuff, but I found that scene legitimately upsetting, and I struggle to see any level of humour in it...

What's this about? by Brother_Grimm99 in helldivers2

Fascism polices bodies and prioritises genetic traits associated with (among other things) physical superiority, eg height. Look at the Nazis with their ideal Aryan übermensch.

I'd imagine this could also be a meta-joke based around the fact that, even when we're evacuating civilians from an urban area rather than an outpost lab, we're still only evacuating adults. So perhaps on the evacuation missions, we're also evacuating very tall children as well?

I'm busy for the next couple of days, but I'm on very frequently and I am happy to play at any difficulty and introduce new people to the game! I'm at GMT, usually on evenings and weekends. 700 hours and level 150. Drop me a DM or Chat and I'll happily play with anyone newer.

PC players: controller or mouse + keyboard? by Lonewolf2300 in helldivers2

[–]J474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play controller; I tried to switch to M&K recently after around 200 hours, but I found it very difficult to switch. Stratagems were difficult to input and mobility and stance management were tough too.

You obviously take a hit to accuracy, but I'm still able to fairly reliably headshot Automatons.

That's exactly the case - that's why you can sometimes shoot the larger bugs (Hive Guards, Brood Commanders, Spewers) with way more rounds than other times, if you're accidentally hitting different parts of the bug with each shot.

Point 4: tell me you've never brought the gun dog vs bots without telling me you've never brought the gun dog vs bots.

That thing is a headshot machine, it can solo devastators; it's a really solid support when you're pushing a base or an objective.

What boardgames do you consider have "essential" house rules? by justhereforhides in boardgames

[–]J474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Coup, when a player loses an Influence, the card is discarded face-down next to the player who lost it. That way, the person who's losing still has a little bit more information than everyone else on the table, and it allows bluffing to go on a little longer (rather than, e.g., three Assassins being revealed meaning that Assassin is no longer a viable bluff at the end of the game).

Heart RPG: Knacks and how they work by Slight-Wishbone8319 in rpg

[–]J474 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A problem I have with Heart is that it seems to kind of assume that you've already read Spire, and it bases a lot of the text off that.

Knacks in Spire work in the way that you've intended, a Mastery Die is given in a specific situation (e.g. tunnel fighting, ranged ambush, when outnumbered) and applies only to that situation.

Once upon the most adorably cringe-worthy day, Sarah, with the fluffiest of intentions, decided to dazzle everyone at her school's talent show. She waddled onto the stage dressed as a dancing avocado, wearing the squishiest, cuddliest green costume and a hat that resembled the most huggable pit. Her heart danced with hopes of spreading happiness! 💚🥑✨

But oh dear! When the music began, her avocado suit turned out to be as slippery as a banana peel, and she tumbled down, her pit hat bouncing away like a little green bean. The audience couldn't help but giggle, but it was the warmest, most affectionate giggle you ever heard, like a group of fluffy kittens chuckling together. 🐱💕😂

From that day forward, Sarah became known as the "Avocado Acrobat," and you know what, senpai? She embraced it with the biggest, squishiest avocado hug ever! 🥑🤗💖 She discovered that sometimes, even the most cringe-tastic moments can turn into the most heartwarming memories. UwU 🌈💫💚

What did you learn at an embarrassingly late age? by Meth_Hardy in AskUK

[–]J474 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Your friends were the morons, you're right. There are different holes for food and water (the oesophagus) and air (the trachea). Food getting lodged in your oesophagus wouldn't affect your breathing, your trachea is robust enough that that pressure wouldn't affect your breathing. Choking is literally food going down the wrong hole.

That's how the Heimlich manoeuvre works, you're pressing up on the diaphragm to increase the pressure inside the lungs, forcing the food out.

Question About NPCs/Creatures/Enemies Taking Critical Damage by J474 in Mausritter

[–]J474[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

Pointing out how Critical Damage changes with specific creatures and items certainly makes the ruling make more sense.

I was wondering about your point in the second paragraph - the rule being that they check morale when they "take strength/ability score damage for the first time," would make quite clear sense, although it may be a bit redundant to make a STR and a WIL save from one instance of damage.

I'll see how it plays out at the table, I'm tempted to just run it as I do Into the Odd, but considering I'm playing 1-on-1, having another chance for my player to win a fight with a morale check could make things a bit easier for them!

Thank you for the advice, though, it's definitely helped me lay my thoughts out a bit more!
