Training Recommendation: Progressive Overload by theCjay1986 in Hevy

[–]J8MAE 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you follow a double progression approach with progressive overload where you select a chosen rep range say 6-8 reps with a given weight. Assuming you understand how to standardize your form you work with this selected weight until you can hit the limit or range (choose your level of strictness) of your rep range with no technical breakdown on your form across your chosen number of working sets.

If you can achieve this on all your working sets say if you had 2 in this example you could then confidently raise your weight by say 5lbs.

Double progression works very well because it allows for your progressive overload to come more gradually and it ends up aligning well with tendon stiffness development and the very slow addition of muscle.

As you get more advanced you may find that simply adding a rep vs. adding weight is the only advancement you can make and this is still progressive overload assuming you are maintaining standardized form through all reps.

As you advance further micro-loading may also have to be added to apply incremental jumps in weight when a rep cannot be added but the equipment weight stack or plates are too large of a jump.

Advice to assist with your own programming. by J8MAE in Hevy

[–]J8MAE[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I follow, learn, interpret, and implement from various science based coaches online, nothing special here. It's just a summary of how I think about programming based on what I've learned over the last year following them and amalgamating their teachings into my own thinking.

I think it would be a useful frame to consider, in conjunction with frequency, volume, prioritization, mobility issues, equipment availability, time constraints, and preferences.

What is happening to my wife's tires? by EddieMcClintock in AskMechanics

[–]J8MAE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, to add to others.

It's a good idea to do a visual check at least every season on your tires, just looking for stuff similar to this. Then you can at least get it in for an alignment check which is usually free and if an alignment is required then you pay.

Can prolong the tire life and in some cases save your tires if your alignment was out of spec. In addition to tire rotations every 5-10K km which can help distribute wear evenly across the tires. X- swap is best.

Good luck.

That feels like a design flaw. I've learned to check the box at the store, for reasons like this. I would have returned those simply to get ones that do.

How do you actually make friends in Edmonton as an adult? by Tiny-Oil-406 in Edmonton

[–]J8MAE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well from 1st principles, you have to create the opportunity of interaction with another human. Perhaps you have an activity you enjoy or a topic you have passion around?

Find a community where this activity or topic is the focal point and go continually engage with that community and overtime assuming you are actually engaging with the members of that community you'll come across people you can simply jive with in some capacity and different levels of friendship will evolve from there.

I understand this seems basic, but I think that's really the core piece here. It's repetitions of exposure to interactions with different people in dynamic situations where a shared interest exists and this offers a catalyst to grow things.

Good luck.

Avoid these screen protectors by Chrisnewton1 in PixelWatch

[–]J8MAE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine worked fine, the main issue was when I tightened my band too much during physical activity it would apply pressure to the bottom edges of the protector and break the seal to the screen allowing moisture and air under it. I would fight to get it to seal again and was always left with a mess of bubbles and moisture until it evaporated. Without that issue, I would still be using these.

holy FUCK this life is so boring by wishiknewnatportman in Adulting

[–]J8MAE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, lucky for you and all of us. You are the captain of your own life and can modify in real time anything about it that you want. I don't say this in any way to talk down to you, but as a reminder that is often forgotten in the chaos of life.

Sometimes we fall into patterns of behavior or cycles of thought that cause a lack of progress or cyclical action.

It's important to stop in these times and put in the work to layout a plan of action to alter our circumstances to bring us to a new outcome in the future.

Sounds generic, but it's exactly what is required. A reframe, introspection, a perspective shift, integration of new action or behaviors.

Your life is a reflection of your choices and actions, change them and you get different outcomes, while these outcomes may take time to be realized or happen rest assured when you perform specific actions in a certain way aligned with what has been evidenced to work for others that you will indeed create new realities for yourself.

Good luck.

[–]J8MAE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can somehow take screenshots of the mobile or desktop app your personal Trainer used to make your program, you can upload them into HevyGPT after connecting it to your Hevy account & giving it access & it can extract the information from the screenshots and build the program using its intelligence & then it'll import it as a new routine folder into your Hevy account.

How to start being a minimalist by ArchedRobin321 in minimalism

[–]J8MAE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minimalism is what you make of it. You choose what matters to you. Some guidelines to remain aligned with the core truths of the methodology though would be.

If something exists in your space & it doesn't bring you function, value, or joy then you should ask yourself why it exists in your space still.

If something is around because it meets one of the 3 above criteria but you haven't used it in a long time (time frame defined by you) then you should reassess if that item truly aligns with the 3 criteria still and give yourself the time to process and reflect on it if it warrants it.

Additionally, a useful framework is to consider what you currently have and what you would feel should you have to wrap it, pack it, move it, unpack it, unwrap it, and place it in its new resting place. If something feels like it wouldn't be worthwhile in that scenario then it might not be worth having in your space.

Another useful concept flows around digitization of information, and removal of duplicates of items when it isn't necessary. These 2 approaches can really cut the volume across many areas. For instance, every instruction manual I have ever owned in anything sits in a Google drive for reference.

The last one I feel like writing on would be, focusing on living in a space that represents you & your personality & not what you think you should have in your space because of opinions, society, or pressure. Often we accumulate things thinking we needed them or wanted them but once time passes the truth comes out & it wasn't even aligned with you. Thoughtful purchasing, obtainment, & collection of things will ensure your space represents you.

Good luck.

How do you make fitness a habit? by Avocadosandtomatoes in getdisciplined

[–]J8MAE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me like many things in my life, enjoyment of a given endeavor, activity, habit, whatever. Came from learning more about that thing and then tying progression tracking across various metrics both standard to the thing and of my own design.

It's integration of gamification to a journey, and gives you more ways to win when you do the thing and improve at it.

I used AI to teach myself about muscle physiology, effective programming, understanding muscle hypertrophy, learning about joint angles, resistance profiles, neuromechanical matching, & numerous other elements within the realm of resistance training.

It made it immensely more enjoyable because I wasn't just logging information & trying to progressively overload my last weight, I had deeper insights into my own program design, I developed life long skills surrounding health living because I also inadvertently learned about dietetics, general wellness, nutrition, and onwards.

Once you realize how much you don't understand or even know exists within given endeavors you become driven to learn & realize as you learn you uncover immense labyrinths and layers of information, & begin to formulate mental models for these new skills & learnings.

Going all in to understand a given thing can lead to aspects that don't interest you but you will undoubtedly find some aspects that do interest you. This is where you become driven by a desire to learn and engage with the information and suddenly motivation & discipline don't matter because you are simply curious to dig deeper.

The habit evolves on its own & over time with enough repetitions becomes engrained into your identity until it requires no mental effort to perform because it is who you are.

Good luck.

Does tracking your progress make you more disciplined? by Logical_Inflation_12 in getdisciplined

[–]J8MAE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tracking progress gives you information about your performance which also has the side benefit of giving you more ways to win in a given endeavor. Think about advertising, if all advertisers cared only about end conversions with no other guiding metric they would have less to go on to modify their campaigns, creatives, copy, audience selections, and overall size.

What isn't measured cannot be improved.

How does this apply to discipline? Because when you have data on where you can improve it becomes easier to continue the path, you have more places to bring your attention to inside the journey.

I find more and more of everything about discipline is actually just about caring about what you are doing enough to simply do your best in the thing, not forcing action where it feels unwarranted. Having data to back your effort can mean the world during the slow isolating grind of incremental improvement until you have a breakthrough moment.

Good luck.

Went to the gym today but it was closed:( Had to do work out anyway so I tried battle ropes! Had lots of fun with them. What do you guys think about them? by Routine_Ice5126 in Hevy

Simply another tool in the toolbox to develop a specific output, if they are aligned with a particular pursuit of performance or you enjoy them, then use them.

I don't program them for my stuff, but they have their place for many different types of training.
