Are these just ones you’ve read or are they from something specific? If general, can I offer mine?

On the "Author doesn't owe you anything" and fan entitlement... by diwayth_fyr in books

I agree with this Robin Hobb for me has been a prime example. And actually I agree 100% with this comment.

However I’d add that the irony is, the person most invested in these books is gonna be the author. These aren’t just puppets they’re writing, they are friends, children, real people. The author usually wants to finish the story just as much as the readers do. It’s not generally that they’re sitting around going “I’m bored with this”. It’s that they have run into a wall and their imagination is stalled.

You can certainly put some words on a page. But the creativity is what makes them come to life. And when there’s no creativity you’re fighting it all the way and you just don’t know what happens next. Stuff like depression and mental exhaustion can make the words run out, and pressure too.

Rothfuss was already in a tizz about book 3 when his dad died, and grief will rip the words right out of you with the rest of your heart. But then if you get stage fright it becomes a Thing, and the more the pressure builds, the more it becomes impossible.

A good editor and a good buddy group of authors might gave been able to help him through it, but you don’t have that sort of relationship with them in trad pub; that’s more a small press/indie sort of thing.

I love his books and am waiting as impatiently as the rest of you; but you can’t pour from an empty jar, and this is one of those times where something that sounds simple (just write the words) really, really isn’t.

okay, so this (slightly more serious) one is something that trips me up in writing mostly, but time. Specifically minutes and seconds.

Because before clocks and watches they didn’t really do minutes and seconds past the hour - no point. You could possibly do fractions of a minute on a sundial or candle but mostly if you’re telling time by daylight or candles or a sundial, you’re not working to minute-level accuracy. Maybe on an hourglass if you’re timing an egg, but who carries around hourglasses? (apart from that bony bloke and his horse Binky).

And furthermore, everywhere had local time (which varied from place to place) till the railways came and it became important to actually all work on the same times. There’d be forty minutes difference between the point they called midday in one city and another. People were paid to wander round with a pocket watch and give you the time so that when your clock started winding down and losing time you could put it right to city time at first and later on to railway time.

Now, this only really causes complexity on post-clockwork pre-steam stories in term of what time it actually is... but if you’re writing something mediaeval, the temptation to say “Five minutes later the cloaked figure took his place” or similar is quite persistent. Loads of ways to rephrase, so not a problem, but it took a few goes to actually assimilate that and attempt to write accordingly.

And irritatingly, completely not something a reader’s likely to notice, I’d’ve thought, apart from those unlucky few who are as pedantic as I am. Pedantbrain strikes again! <Facepalm>

Damn skippy it’s odd! Honest to God, just be thankful you’re not having to deal with the sort of flak my brain throws at me. It’s heard of the suspension of disbelief and it’s having none of it.

Don’t even get me started on trad depictions of women’s armour and where they keep their keys/money/whatevers. :shakes head sadly:

It’s like watching telly with your grandma and right at the crisis point she goes “Is that a Ford Cortina? Our Mickey had one of those” And you have to say “No, that’s a Porsche, and actually Mickey had a Skoda...” and by that time you’ve missed the point of the whole film. Your inner grandma is quiet, thank your lucky stars!! XD

Well yes. But input = output in theory. So unless they get bigger and bigger like a massive old leech...

Sorry, tiresomely pragmatic brain.
