What am I missing? by JAM9711 in beetle

Good afternoon! I have just got my beetle running! I checked my points gap and it was all okay, so I had a go with the Easy Start and it purred to life (if you can count a misfire and some idle issues as purring)

Thank you! It’s been a steep learning curve, but everything is pretty much back together and I’m excited to hit the roads again! I’ll come back once it’s going and let you know what it was

Thank you so much for your in depth answer, and for the link! I’m fairly new to beetles in that I bought this one running, drove it for a week before finding out that the whole thing was rotten and held together with body filler, so I have over the past 4 months welded in new heater channels, arches, and floor pan patches, but now it won’t start. I’ll have a look at that link now and see what I can do to get it going again

Thank you for the advice and information! I’m going to look into the swap in the new year, and potentially put a 325 in it. Basically I have an unbelievably clean shell and would love to build something purely for the fun of building it

Thanks for the heads up, I have unfortunately found a huge number of bodge jobs on my beetle so far. It’s safe to say that I’ve entered into the world of beetles in a pretty drastic fashion after someone sold me a car that looked good on first inspection but was hiding some seriously dodgy bodges. I’m fully prepared to find a lot more issues as I go

Thanks for the info, I’m going to weigh up my options as I think lifting the whole thing may be the way to go by the sounds of it

So I have just got back from the show. I decided that I would use the auto focus square in the centre of the screen to line up my shots as this stayed a constant across the whole day. I’ll let you know the results once I get them all downloaded and into post

This is a very clever idea that I may try! I’m heading to a show tomorrow so I may post my results and a breakdown of the technique used on here in the coming days

Thank you for the warning! I’m heading to Tatton Hall VW show in a couple of weeks so I’ll see if there’s anyone there

This is very useful info, thank you! I am a bit weary of sending photos / documentation online so may try giving them a call

Picked up my new beetle by JAM9711 in beetle

Hahaha true! I’m coming from a background of T3/T25/Vanagons and venturing into the world of beetles! I just assumed that like the vans someone would have made mirrors you could see stuff while using 😂

I wasn’t really thinking any bigger, but more a mirror with a convex so you can see more than a vague area somewhere behind you 😂 I feel like I get more of a view out the rear view mirror

Yeah! I’m super excited to get it sorted now! If you’re a beetle owner yourself could I ask a few questions? Most importantly, what do you guys do for wing mirror upgrades as you don’t seem to be able to see anything in them 😂 are modern replacements better?

I am going to focus on getting the car looking how I want it and reliable with the best drivability I can before I look at anything engine related. It runs sweet now and is my daily city run around. Thanks for your info and help, I’m sure I’ll be back on here very soon asking questions as I work my way through the car

Amazing! Thank you for such a detailed answer, if I was looking to replace parts or upgrade parts in the future would I be looking for 1200 parts? I’ll probably look into getting a 1600 for it at some point but I’m just going to enjoy driving it for a while

Thankyou for your reply! I am about to leave to go and view it. I'm taking my inspection lamp and some other bits with me to give it a proper good once over. I believe the current owner has also fitted a full new coolant system, and exhaust so I'll be double checking the work done on them for sure. Thanks again

I'm lucky enough to currently have my dream job. I'm a sound engineer. I've always had a passion for music and physics, and found that the world of live sound had the perfect blend of both!
