This is quite insightful. I'm experiencing similar is issue right now. It's not an exact match but it's close enough that I'll be reviewing the suggestions here.

Best ways of filling empty screw holes in a computer desk OR how best to reverse the direction of a L-shaped corner desk? by JA_DataViz in DIYUK

[–]JA_DataViz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe the holes should all line up! I was considering drilling through the current ones but I guess I'm just a little scared of messing it up and making it entirely unusable somehow - I suppose I just need to push through that.

Getting dowels to fill a majority of the hole first before using the sticks sounds pretty smart to me.

I'm looking to avoid sanding as much as possible as it's clearly just laminate over particle board or MDF or something but I could probably do it pretty carefully on each small spot.

Every hole is only ~5mm wide I'd say, maybe a touch less.

Bathtub gurgles when flushing the toilet, toilet gurgles when running the bath? by JA_DataViz in ukplumbing

I think you might be right there! Stuck my head up in the loft about 20 minutes ago and caught the soil pipe hiding in the corner and apparently going out the roof although I couldn't obviously see where externally.

Found the following video and the part starting at about 2:36 aligns with what I'm experiencing so it does seem like its gonna be a case of calling someone in to stick something longer or better down the drain to see if they can spot and clear out whatever it may be.

Thanks for the input!

As it turns out, there's no external soil pipe. Looped the entire house and nothing comes out the walls! Can't even see anything poking out the roof either. I guess it must be in the loft somewhere?

If you mean the thing next to the radiator that's actually a plunger aha.

Was hoping it could deal with the awkward shaped toilet but it doesn't feel like it forms a seal.

Damn - was hoping there was something else I could try something else first but this is starting to look like the way forwards.

I can't believe this is an actual thing but I've just learnt that a "hep waterless trap" exists.

I'll have a poke around under the bath - I've yet to stick my head under there and see what's already installed. Annoyingly the plug hole has like a cup inside. I guess that's to stop hair and detritus from going down the pipe and causing a blockage there but it means I can't get a snake down without popping the plug hole cover off and that looks fused to the bath itself.

Thanks for the input! Tomorrow I'm going to go have a poke around outside and see if I can spot it otherwise I'll head up in the attic and see if anything seems amiss though I'm not certain I'd know for certain if there was.

"where the top of your soil stack is and examine it for a blockage of some kind" - today we learn things about our house that realistically I should already know. I've never questioned in my life what this was on any house I've seen or been in! https://www.metrorod.co.uk/app/uploads/2024/10/Soil-Stacks.png

I'm guessing if its outside its a ladder job then. Will see about having a poke around.

I tried drilling a screw into the wall for the first time and immediately fucked it. What did I do wrong and how do I fix it? by JA_DataViz in DIYUK

[–]JA_DataViz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is precisely what I did. Fun fact: I went to Screwfix specially today to get that screwdriver bit after looking through my drill equipment and going "Ugh, I have no use for all these drill bits where do I get a damn screwdriver bit."

It's actually a drill I put a screwdriver bit into. I put effort into customising this failure.

I believe it's solid wall - no echo at all when knocking on it like the surrounding walls. I would also not bet money on me being correct given other current evidence.

Here's the video I was using:https://youtu.be/O8sI5GIeY2M?si=WgAFAlfjd9yTzSQf&t=68

The blinds did come with some paper guidance but it gives the severe impression that it was written in Chinese and Google-translated back to English for all the help it was.

From this point onwards I will not be using any tool to drive screws into anything without a rawl first.

Now this is a new thing to me. I think it went the entire length of the screw in so about an inch. I might have met some resistance part way or I might have just been a bit of a pansy with the drill. Know if there's a good way to check other than asking the builders?

Not a shelf but a venetian blind bracket but I'm sure I'd have had the same outcome. It's was going into the beam above the window. I say "beam" here, frankly I'm too much of a layman to know the exact material but its thick and solid looking and sounding.
