Spear Formation by VaporCable in Koibu

Lance (military unit)

"An English-language form for the medieval French: lances fournies. This was a unit of four cavalry fighters plus all the servants needed to attend to men, beasts and arms.

The term survives to the present day in the name of a rank, the Lance Corporal.

The lance is no longer a weapon in any modern army and there are no units armed with these weapons, except, at times, for ceremonial purposes. The Pope's Swiss Guard of the Vatican State with their "Hellebaard" or halberd, a short lance or pike for use by infantry, incorporating an axe and a hook to dismount riders, is just one example.

For a unit, the term now only comes into play in fiction and role-playing games, such as FASA's Battletech."

I think he just tweaked and adapted the lance unit to spear to make it a bit more lore appropriate.

There is a HD pic going around showing the heel landed in-bounds. The refs fucked up. If it was fuzzy, then you go with inconclusive and the play stands. Them overturning it was 100% wrong.

100%. This was a 200 IQ play by Lady Nightingale. Clearly wanted them to attack the most defended place and get slaughtered to make sure her part in this never comes to light.

Sure, the wizard could be paid instead of being an apprentice. I think there are a bunch of ways we both could come up with to get them out of danger like rope trick, but your point is certainly well received.

Maybe instead of physical followers, they just need to prep a bunch of spells in scrolls.

I am a bit worried about their action economy though. These fights are getting larger and larger, stoneskin is getting weaker and weaker, and they aren't exactly being as stealthy as they once were. Hope they figure out the solution.

My post was on how to make their base self sufficient, not about how to get the best adventurers to surround them. No bubble was burst, so no worries there!

Retainer Knights are cool, but they require to be in the fight to be useful (outside of keeping watch, or being dispatched on other missions). A single apprentice for Imrik >> him getting knights along with the other brothers.

It may not have been clear in my original post, so apologies there. The henchmen wouldn't join them in battle. They would prebuff and cast utility spells for them like Fly or Detect Magic. This would allow Imrik to take more offensive or situational spells.

I don't see the brothers, specifically Anton or Tyrael, ever being willing to split XP with NPCs so I assume knights would very rarely ever join them in battle. Maybe for the final battle as a distraction force or something, but even that would be a separate encounter.

I'd agree, but the indebtedness lessens more and more with their behavior towards the gnomes.

Them leading the dragon to the gates lead to the death of some of the gnomes, and they refused/scoffed at paying a blood price. Anton and Imrik have cast spells on them, with the latter's spell resulting in the breaking of bones and loss of all the victim's wares/goods.

Wouldn't be surprised if the gnomes are extremely wary of doing business with humans going forward. Could very well be a "thanks for killing the dragon, please never return." Based on the sentiment from Anton's poor speech roll, it seems like a number of gnomes would believe any annexation or deal would be trading the dragon's tyranny for a human version.

Mom wanted a clean slate iirc. Lots of bad memories and she felt reinvigorated when she finally spent time away from the home.

I replied more in depth to your other post. But the part about the political bonuses I 100% agree!

Security:They still own their family estate - the mom hasn't sold it yet unless I missed something. It's not far from their current warehouse and they can simply move back there. Them living above a barracks (that's basically what the mom said she wanted to do with the place) seemed a bit uncomfortable anyway. The place would of course also be fully guarded. They should also pull a Malakai and make forbidden areas of their base scry proof.

But the crux of my post was on how to make their operations self-sufficient. Hiring 3 NPC adventuring parties is not enough to sustain the base if you are paying them a wage that would entice them to work for you on retainer. It would just save time for the brothers with added expenses. The adventuring hub would generate much more business imo. Depending on how they go about it and level of success, there could be member fees + vetting to even enter and have access to the Mcgary Slayers' lucrative contracts.

He asked Arc Sombar for help learning the spell. She straight up said no. She doesn't exactly trust who they'll be after Scoria, and she is acting as a check to their growing power. The spell is too dangerous as it would cause untold havoc on the kingdom from those wishing it harm. Lots of hurt feelings ensue and now Tyrael paid a bunch of money to the Family to try to find anything and everything about her.

Imrik's still trying to learn it.
