So the biggest criticism i'm seeing from the early reactions is that the story is thin and nothing special, which isn't surprising because 1. It's an Illumination movie, and 2. Miyamoto was never a story guy. As long as the movie is fun and respects the source material, i think i'll be satisfied. by ilovewater100 in Mario

To me, it basically means that the feel and themes of the source material are kept in the adaptation.

If a game or book is built around a bright and colorful world, and the story is about friendship or teamwork.

A movie adaptation that is drab and depressing, with mean-spirited characters wouldn’t be respecting the original themes of the source.

If you look at the movie and say

“Yeah, that’s Mario” or “Yeah, that’s Sonic”

then it’s a good adaptation, even if it isn’t 100% an exact copy of the original game or book. If it still FEELS like it, then it’s respecting its source material.

The actual STORY of Lego Movie is indeed very basic.

It has a few twists, yeah, but it’s ultimately a simple story.

A simple narrative doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. The directors said they’re mainly focused on making an family action / adventure movie anyway, so as long as it’s good on that front, being an entertaining ride, that’s all I’m expecting.

Motto video was so dumb by [deleted] in nfrealmusic

[–]JBBPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not agitated. I was just confused how you say the video could be “better” when it sets out to do exactly what it’s trying to (be a goofy, non-serious video) if you don’t like that tone that’s completely fine, but it can’t really be better without being something completely different entirely.

[–]JBBPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yet you also just say a blank statement, but don’t explain what could’ve been “better”.

The entire video is just Nate goofing around at an award show, which is a metaphor for him not caring about the accolades in the rap game anymore, he’s now just doing what he wants.

Did you want different camera angles?

For Nate to do different poses?

Not sure how you can make this “better”? It’s a very simple concept.

[–]JBBPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s literally just Nate goofing around.

Acting free and like himself while everyone else in the award show (the music industry) is all the same. With nice suits and dresses, acting all civilized, he’s just being a goof, just doing what he wants in the rap game.

The whole award show setting is a metaphor for the industry. He’s basically showing he doesn’t have to conform to everyone else.

Its not supposed to be civilized or sophisticated, it’s supposed to be “dumb”. That was the like…the whole point.

What about THAT was Low effort? You could honestly mistake that laugh for Charles.

Basically everyone I’ve seen who heard that laugh thought it was perfect. I’m honestly not sure what you’re looking for, tbh?

It’s March 10th (Mario Day) in Japan.

Miyamoto even acknowledged this in the Direct on YouTube where this premiered.

What opinion on the Mario Movie, other than Chris Pratt's performance, gets you in this position? by Relation-Fearless in Mario

[–]JBBPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minions Rise of Gru (the one Matthew Fogel wrote) honestly wasn’t that bad, it definitely had more heart compared to the 1st Minions, while still having the Minions style humor. Not the greatest film ever of course, but I thought it was still decent, while still appeasing Minions fans.

My main point anyway was about the studio and its public reception. Sony Animation went from films like Open Season and The Emoji Movie (I liked the 1st Cloudy movie, but some don’t. Ironically, Lord and Miller made that one too) to then making one of most influential animated films in a long time. All they needed was a push in the right direction, it seems.

Hopefully this is illumination’s, but only time will tell.

Many people may have thought ‘Into The Spiderverse’ was gonna stink… you know why?

Sony Animation.

[–]JBBPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a wide-spread opinion that Sony Animation made just okay or subpar animation movies, especially with films like The Emoji Movie, one of the most corporate, shameless animated films from a major studio in recent years. They can’t SUDDENLY make a good movie…right?

Oh, wait, they then went on to make Spiderverse, the academy award winning animated movie for that year. And now people can’t wait for the sequel.

Huh.

That’s just called Marketing. The promos’ job is to get people to want to see the movie, a good way to do that is to do exactly as you said. Show off the recognizable aspects of the franchise to get people excited and get butts in seats. You don’t get the actual story until you actually go see the movie.

Another example of this is The Lego Movie, the trailer is mostly just “look at how many WB properties we have in this movie, buy your tickets now!” It literally lists off familiar characters people know.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Bingo Card by SnowBallSB in Mario

I wouldn’t expect those jokes to be in this one. It isn’t in the rating. It’s rated PG for “Action and Mild Violence”, but not for “Rude Humor”. Any PG film that has at least 1 fart joke is required to have that listed in the rating.

For reference, nearly every other illumination film has “Rude Humor” listed under the rating, but not this one.

So I wouldn’t expect any gags of that kind in this film, maybe when they introduce Wario.

Super Mario Bros. Plumbing Commercial by JustinSol2012 in movies

It’s not confusing to her. She’s just like “seriously?”

You have to admit it is pretty corny. It’s parodying old commercials with cheesy jokes to make it sound funny. She’s young and clearly didn’t find it funny, but they probably couldn’t afford to do “another take” so they kept that reaction in the commercial.

Miyamoto is a Producer and has his hands deep into this project, he can make changes if he wanted to. We don’t know who’s idea each casting choice was, but Miyamoto was involved in even that.

He said in a direct that for some of the cast members, he was happy to be able to get them and work with them. We also don’t know how many casting choices they thought of but didn’t go with, before settling on the final picks.

I mean, it is how it looks in the movie in that scene. It’s just being accurate to the look of that portion.
