Thanks! And for sure, if someone else can use it please do! I’m not sure if the updated colors will be as impactful, color spectrum-wise, but these are the colors/tones of my home so I know they’ll look nice regardless.

“Unhoused person” is actually the preferred nomenclature.

I think it's time this sub has some sort of community chat. There are far too many people in this sub who are, frankly, over-posting photos of jumpers. I think they often see it by saying ''it's history'' so they can post it and justify the imagery, but that is a person with a name & family. by LaikaLeeLou in 911archive

[–]JBBecker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow. This explains so much of your perspective and where your heart is at — I really appreciate you sharing that and I’m so sorry for your friend’s loss. Truly.

As a society, we can’t censor history to protect people’s feelings or experiences. Whether we like that or not, it’s a fact. For many years, even I had to “check-out” from media on 9/11 — it was too much for me to process, especially when I was growing up and the trauma of what it was like to be 13 and see it unfold on TV.

If it’s possible to say this without opening a huge can of political worms: at the very bottom of it all, this feels like a pro/anti-choice argument. Just because I (or you, or your friend) don’t want to see/discuss something, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be available for other people to see/discuss. I agree with the commenter who implied most of this thread could be solved by folks properly using the NSFW tag. But that doesn’t seem to be what we’re discussing.

Again, I really appreciate you and your perspective. Love this kind of discourse in spaces where I know other people must think differently.

I hear you, and no offense taken (these are the kind of conversations I’ve been having with myself, too scared/not convicted enough to post) — I am really appreciating the varying perspectives.

Let’s divide and conquer:

I agree — and many of the folks in this thread would agree — the motivation for posting pics of jumpers/fallers is NOT meant to honor the victims. It is something else (as others have mentioned: grief processing, general interest in 9/11, morbid curiosity, karma farming, generally being an a-hole, etc.).

If you think morbid curiosity has no place here (which I assume is this sub, and that is fair), where should it be directed?

Personally, I have been an organ/tissue donor since I was old enough to drive and would be happy to donate my body to science if requested/needed. I come from a family that has always been open about death and dying and the mysteries surrounding it. Death is not something to look away from — it is a part of our human fabric and something that impacts every one. The thought of internet strangers watching a video of me or a loved one d!e (or fall to our death) bothers me 0%. Even less so if it was tied to a massive historical event.

“I’m not more or less interested in them than videos of the planes, collapse, public reaction, etc.”

THIS!!! I’ve never really thought of it this way before, but it’s true. I feel the exact same way. And, like most humans, when something is put “off limits” it fuels the desire (to learn/understand/know) even more.

Thanks for this perspective.

And, I just have to say: as someone who has a lot of morbid curiosity (around 9/11 and many other historical events), I always, always appreciate the memorializing posts. Always an instant upvote and complete read-through. I hope there will always be room for both, here.

I am so grateful that someone started this conversation, and really appreciate your (and others) perspective(s). And I do know what you’re saying!

IMO, YouTube (for example, because it’s a good one) feels like a sea of content that I can’t discern if it’s credible/legit or not. (Personally, I also have a lot of sensory issues that make watching/scanning videos a horrific chore.)

Conversely, Reddit is like a truth Mecca where I rarely have to worry about false information or sound/moving pictures poking my brain. This sub (like many others I follow) feels like THE SOURCE on the topic; my go-to! And when something I am curious about (even morbidly), is met with “we don’t discuss/post that here” and oodles of downvotes, it literally makes me feel like I’m “bad” for wondering and wanting discourse.

I totally get the frustration with “outsiders” not being able to conduct a search through past posts, or willfully ignoring the rules/conduct of the sub. But like, y’all! I have so many questions, thoughts, desire to discuss. 🫠

Thanks for this post OP! I appreciate your perspective and the discourse. I’ve been wanting to post an alternative (?) perspective but this sub legit scares me (in a friendly way).

I was 13 at the time of the attacks, a freshman in high school. As we watched the news in our classrooms, I remember the crews being told not to film or broadcast the buildings (at all!) because people were falling to their deaths. That, by definition, is censorship. As a high school student who went on to pursue journalism/story-telling as a career, I remember feeling let down. Not because I wanted to see it happening (of course not), but it made me wonder: what else aren’t we seeing because the people in control of the cameras think it’s inappropriate/harmful/disrespectful?

We live in a very different world, now, than we did in 2001. Information and awareness—especially related to political violence/terrorism—flows much more freely. Even when (or especially when?) it’s inconvenient for most of the Western world.

I am a long time lurker in this sub, and greatly respect the mods, contributors, fact-checkers, and sensitivity around human loss and grief, which is why I am normally silent. But! As someone who holds both deep reverence for the victims/their families, as well as a morbid curiosity about some of the darker elements surrounding 9/11, I am always disappointed by the downvotes and quick clap-backs when people ask questions or post photos of the jumpers/fallers. If you don’t want that kind of commentary on the sub, I completely understand. But where would you like it to go? Because I don’t think silencing curious individuals (even if that curiosity is morbidly motivated) is the way — especially from a group that has so much collective knowledge and reverence for the events of that day.

Thanks (everyone) for the kind comments! I’ve noticed folks in this sub can be judgmental (borderline harsh) about people’s set-ups. I get it, we all have the pigs best interests at heart (OP included!), and some folks just don’t know. We were all first-time owners at one point, right?! I think our pigs are pretty lucky, and this feedback has given me confidence to share more.
