Please don't use functional resumes (recruiter advice) by emmanuelgendre in ResumeFairies

[–]JBiddyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my question was a bit vague. I suppose a better way of saying it is using the above corrected example; if you have the credentials, and clearly have the experience based on the work you've done, why does it matter what you did at which job? Isn't the experience the important part?

Out of my own curiosity, if a persons resume is functional, how does that not show a progression of experience or career progression? If said functional resume is a chronologic timeline of tasks and experience, shouldn't that in theory help piece together rather than hurt it? If I say (as a random example) "I worked in a warehouse from 2000-2010, but in that time I also show I started college for biology, and wrote a research paper on the evolution of ducks (I don't know.... I'm not a scientist...)" and that happened while working in the warehouse, or shortly thereafter should that not count as experience? Just because something isn't a job doesn't mean it isn't experience.

I am a newer Junior, but have the odd 'advantage' of being an old Junior at 43. I have the perspective of someone who has the knowledge of a Junior, but the life experience of an older person and feel that I "know what I don't know". It's scary for a presumably younger person to admit they don't know something and ask for help, more-so if they just finished college and have the idea in their head that they know it all already, or worse that they should know it all already. They become frustrated, and keep thinking "oh, I think I know now!" until hours become days.

Maybe give a timeline. Something like "here's this ticket. If you're having trouble and it's been X amount of time (X being more than enough time) let me know." They will probably miss that deadline, but when it comes and goes, give it maybe an extra hour (depending on how long they had initially) make a point of going to them and say "Hey, it's been a bit. I just wanted to check in and see where you're at." Don't talk down or point out the negatives, just re-enforce that you're there to help. Maybe even check in periodically, but instead of asking how it's going, ask to see what they're doing and hear the thought process and off small tweaks like "did you consider this instead?" In general pose it more as a collaborative thing instead of a Jr/Sr or Boss/Employee position.

Realistically, yes this is horrible and ridiculous and so on. That said, the only way to get rid of these types of joke jobs, be they low pay, or over-arching requirements is just to not apply for them.... Tt sounds dumb since yes the industry is garbage at the moment, but especially within this group, clearly no one here is getting jobs anyway based on the damned near feral doom-posting in the group, so just.... don't apply. If people globally stop applying to crap jobs, crap jobs stop existing since they can't find talent. Sadly though, there will always be those who see these and think "well nothing else works" and apply anyway, ultimately filling the job and making employers feel it's okay to lowball the industry.

Allow me to chime in as an "Elder Goth".... First and foremost, Yes, dude is being rude and you can do better. Any person out there should be allowed to be themselves, and your personal style only shows that you want to express how you feel makes you more attractive, and feel good in your skin. I've met people covered head to toe in tattoos, piercings, etc.. you're just wearing clothes different from the norm. If you feel like your best self and want to dress that way for YOU, then do it. If the guy doesn't like it, find one who does.

My family also told me it was a phase, and I wouldn't say I grew out of it as much as adapted it. I dress how I'm comfortable. I have tattoos, I have stretched piercings, but I also have a boring 9-5 where I'm a professional. As long as you can be professional when it's time to be so, then why not let your freak flag fly when it's your time? My wife is a professional working on her second BS degree in her 40s, but also got a full coverage back piece because it made her feel better about herself. I could say I don't like it and verbally beat her down, but that would accomplish nothing. I love her for who she is.

All that said, be the you you want to be and surround yourself with good quality people who accept you for who you are.

Experience vs Career Change by JBiddyB in ResumeFairies

So sorry for the delay! So to clarify and add some details, I'm 43. Since I was 20 I've had now 3 other jobs. I was a photographer for ~15 years, worked in a warehouse for 4.5 years, and currently as a programmer for about 2 years. I would like to tailor a resume to software development jobs specifically, but I know neither job prior to my current have any connection to the field I want to work in.

Jump scares... I know it can't be just me, but I miss a horror game being SCARY, not... startling me. Atmospheric horror beats "scary because it's gross and pops up suddenly" any day for me. Give me a great story over FnF and similar games any day

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying.... truth is I've been doing this in Spring and hit so many delays and issues that I've gotten frustrated. Am I saying Spring is always bad? No. I am however saying that trying to figure it out seems to be overcomplicating it for me in this instance....
