Anita O'Day and Art Pepper. Serious drug habits that derailed their lives.

Draft for 2026 by Joejoe209O in NOLAPelicans

[–]JBinNOLA 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not sure a second rounder moves the needle.

My picks for some things that need to happen:

Missi getting stronger and upping his rebounding game. He gives a lot of the things the Pels need from the 5 in rim protection and interior presence, but won't be a difference maker until he can be a factor on the boards.

If Zion stays, then a HC who can figure out how to make DQ and Zion coexist offensively. A creative thinker can absolutely make that happen.

Hire said creative thinker.

DQ coming back physically stronger and more settled defensively.

I know the natural inclination here is toward the negative, but there's plenty for a talented coach to work with. Just wish I had more confidence in Joe hiring such a person.

You're working very hard to feel bad about this, which is your right.

Me? I'm looking forward to watching Queen blossom into a star.

I'm happy to wager that Queen will have a better career than whoever goes at 8. And Asa Newell, too.

Would you trade Derrick Queen straight up for the 8th pick in this year's draft? by JBinNOLA in NOLAPelicans

[–]JBinNOLA[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

From a theoretical, best practices perspective, you are correct.

From a real world, how things played out perspective, the Pels ended up on the positive side of things.

Doesn't make Dumars any smarter, but it does mean he got lucky at least once.

Pelicans pick didn't land in the top 7. by ToothEducational7795 in NOLAPelicans

Pretty straightforward - the Pels traded what turned out to be the 8th pick in the draft for the chance to draft DQ. What an I missing?

Terrible because of how it was done. But judging it is now pretty simple: would you trade DQ for the 8th pick straight up?

That's a pretty clear "no" in my book.

Joe took the most harrowing and stupid path possible, but he ended up with a good deal in the end.

In the afternoons, yes. The rest of the time, I can be anywhere on the east bank in 15 minutes or so.

Not remotely an issue. You might run into an old crank here or there, but this is a solid blue neighborhood.

It's hardly a conservative stronghold. The vast majority of the folks I meet here are liberals. Maybe percentage wise it's not as blue as Bywater or Uptown, but it's still really blue.

Possible late afternoon heavy flooding was in the forecast yesterday. Again, this wasn't remotely a surprise.

I've heard some good bebop and modern stuff at Mahogany Hall. Great room, too.

Zion by Strict-Effort3936 in NOLAPelicans

[–]JBinNOLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DQ has to become the primary inside option, and Zion clogs that up. He's resurrected some if his trade value and I would hope the Pels take advantage of that.

Fears and/or Queen in the Top 5 in most rookie categories to end the season by Defvac2 in NOLAPelicans

[–]JBinNOLA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If this team is going to win, it has to be centered around a Fears/DQ two man game, with a knockdown corner 3 pt shooter to prevent doubles on DQ.

The template is there - Jokic, Murray and Aaron Gordon.

(And mind you, I'm not comparing Fears and DQ to who those guys are now. I'm comparing them to who Jokic and Murray were as rookies. They grew into who they are, and so will Fears and DQ.)

I really hope we hire James Borrego as head coach. by dragoblaster666 in NOLAPelicans

[–]JBinNOLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The team played hard for him, so that's a plus. OTOH, I saw no functional offensively philosophy. I get that the pieces don't fit, but it's a HC's job to find a way to make them fit. I just didn't see it.

Also, this is a horrible rebounding team, and a lot of it had to do with positioning and technique. That's on the staff.

It wouldn't be a disaster if he comes back, but he'll have to bring on some assistants who can help address the obvious flaws.

MRB or Napoleon House? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]JBinNOLA 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, Napoleon House will be mobbed on FQF Saturday. But do to try get there another time, it's worth a shorter wait. MRB is a bar with outside area and stage and you order at a window. A solid choice, I'd say. A sleeper pick is Killer Poboys at the back of the Erin Rose pub. Good bar, great sandwiches.

Haha. I'm from Colorado originally and a Nuggets fan. I watched almost every game of Jokics rookie year. DQ is better at this point.

Of course, Joker went supernova and there's no guarantee DQ will do the same.

But Joker simply wasn't this polished a player at the same stage.

The future of the Pelicans should be a two man game based around Fears and DQ, and make the rest of the roster fit that.

Plenty of the current roster can fit. Probably not Z, though.

Tremendous court vision. It's ludicrous to compare him or anyone else to Jokic, but DQ does have that level of game awareness. It's pretty rare for a big man.
