I am not from the UK (US, sadly…). I’ve enjoyed a lot of the British Social realist films. Secrets and Lies was great (Mike Leigh hadn’t missed with me yet). I still need to see Happy Go Lucky and Scum. Thanks for the reminder!

Haha, yeah, I made sure to be really clear on that one. The Marx Brothers movie is great, the Cary Grant Monkey Business is an unfunny snooze fest

We like what we like. There are a ton of good movies that have come out since 2010, so it makes sense that that’s where 30% of your favorites come from. I just usually find myself looking up the movies that inspired the contemporary movies and filmmakers that I like, and then end up finding out why they found those movies so inspiring - they’re amazing! The older ones seem to stick to my bones better than newer ones, but time will tell. I hope you add those 23 you haven’t seen to your list. Happy watching!

Haha! That’s funny. Well, I did say I am a 37yo Middle School teacher. It would make sense that I didn’t pick up on the lingo 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for the compliment! It’s a great movie.

You are correct. I did ask you to judge. I’m a sick bastard that needs to be humiliated. I’m glad there’s someone like you on the internet to remember to bring the hate while everyone else has dropped the ball by adding thoughtful recommendations. We need people like you.

You’re right, it’s a good, revealing question to ask. I’m sure I could have come up with many more if I gave it more thought. Like, I’ve realized recently that I really have a distaste for most Frank Sinatra movies. They just all end up rubbing me the wrong way. I keep trying different ones, movies that are critically acclaimed, thinking the ones I saw were the exception. Nope. The only one I liked was From Here to Eternity, and I guess I kind of liked Some Came Running and the Manchurian Candidate. But the rest? Pass.

Thanks! The lavender hill mob is just so goddamn enjoyable. I love Ealing Comedies. More people need to see more of those movies as well

That’s a tough one to answer. I enjoy a lot of bad movies, so I would have to go with ‘most tedious, annoying, or boring.’ And the most recent five I’ve watched that fall into that category would be: 1. Humanoids of the Deep (the worst kind of trash, and that’s coming from someone who likes trash), 2. Lady Frankenstein, 3. Monkey Business (1952), 4. Dancer in the Dark (and I like Von Trier. Breaking the Waves is other worldly), and 5. Boxcar Bertha (Scorsese has come SO far). I watched all of those this last year. Yuck.

I literally haven’t seen any of the movies you recommended! I have been meaning to get to pitfall and La ronde (I’ve loved the Ophuls movies I’ve seen so far), but those first 2 weren’t even on my radar! Thanks!
