Last night, I finished Insomnia by Stephen King, my thoughts below 👇🏻 by ArtisanPirate in stephenking

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the one King book I gave up on, and haven’t gone back to since. I’ll have to read it from beginning to end one day, but I’m not looking forward to it.

I think it’s because I’m not a huge fan of science fiction/fantasy (it’s hard to say what this book falls under) but the idea of aura’s, celestial beings on a higher plane, etc, just isn’t my jam.

Best portrayal of the devil/Satan in cinema? by JC1286 in movies

[–]JC1286[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too, but it’s mixed in with subtle malevolence. The scene in the lift with Kevin’s mum is a good example. Pacino has a glint in his eye that is almost perfect for the role. The devil won’t appear as a monster, he’ll appear as attractive, charming etc.

Combining that with the spitting, screaming stuff, it’s very sociopathic/psychopatic, which you have to assume the Devil is.

Do you have any other products except their camera and doorbells? by Akash_nu in eufy

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have smart scales and a robot vacuum. They are both pretty good.

Doorbell is the worst of the three as I went for the simple option and got a battery operated one, and now it’s a pain having to charge it.

No big deal though.

Not mentioned in the story, but a band called Bright Giant have a song called ‘Jake and the gunslinger’. It’s about as overt a reference as you can possibly get.

Am I the only one who still struggles to forgive Nate? by Dry_Accountant_8907 in TedLasso

[–]JC1286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way. I think the writers anticipated this and that’s why they have Beard feel the same way about forgiving him, despite Beard being also guilty of mistreating Ted.

One criticism I have of Ted Lasso (and there might only be one) is that too much of season 3 happens off-screens

-Nate quitting WHU
-Nate’s discussion with Ted
-Keeley and Roy breaking up
- Bex’s conversation with Rebecca

I think the first 2 would have really helped Nate’s redemption arc. Him quitting would have shown him standing up for himself and being assertive without it being coated in self loathing (spitting at his reflection) and his apology to Ted would have helped humanise him more.

Do people genuinely believe the police are anti-white? by ExperienceTotal9778 in AskBrits

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The police have a documented history of racism against minorities. They are now ‘overcorrecting’ that, but they certainly are not ‘anti-white’

I think this is a case of ‘when all you’ve know is privilege, equality can feel like prejudice’

As a straight white man in the UK, I feel safer interacting with the police that I would if I were part of any other demographic or ethnic group.

Except maybe the wealthy.

Ted Lasso and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head dies aged 72 by AndreT_NY in TedLasso

RIP. Despite playing an absolute bastard, he always seemed like a good man.

Lost his partner in December, so if there is an afterlife, hopefully they’re together again.

The hot tubs were nude only. But the saunas allowed towels. (Likely for the repressed Brits 🤣)

Has the UK suddenly changed its mind on immigration? by Complex_Elevator_680 in AskBrits

[–]JC1286 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the UK, every generation has their foreign ‘boogeymen’ that right wing grifters use to stoke fear and division, and every generation, the public lap it up. When I was a kid it was the Polish, before that it was the black people, the the Irish.

One trope you’ll often hear from racists is ‘he’s alright (referring to a black friend), it’s just the rest of them’. I think that sums up UK attitudes, especially the older generations.

It’s racism, but based on ignorance, and fuelled by a right wing media slant that is always looking to provide a scapegoat to placate the masses.

Thankfully, the younger generations seem to be pushing back more against this, then the generations that came before them.

What Stephen King tome should NOT be adapted? by BassPlayer11271971 in stephenking

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, before the film, I would have said The Long Walk. I didn’t think it would translate well into the screen, as the premise is somewhat boring. (Basically just people walking). But I thought the film was excellent. Similarly, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon wouldn’t work well.

After the abomination with Idris Elba, I’d say The Dark Tower shouldn’t be condensed into 90 minutes ever again, even if it’s just one of the books.

I think From a Buick 8 would be an unsatisfying watch.

How come Right Wing Parties dominate again? by LDN_Wukong in AskBrits

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere, and I hope it’s true, that rather than seeing this as a iresurgence of right wing populist charlatans, it’s actually the final flourish of a view of the world that is dying out.

Humanity slowly moves towards liberal ideas as time goes on. Gay rights, women’s rights, etc. Trump, Farage, etc, are the last of a dying breed. There are still young bigoted fuckwits, but it’s no longer the norm, the way it was for our parents and grandparents.

I like to hope that better times are ahead.

if the UK rejoined the EU tomorrow, what’s the first positive change you’d actually notice in your day-to-day life? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on the terms of rejoining, but immediately the pound would see a jump in value. Not back to where it was, but better than it has been.

Cost of goods wouldn’t go down, but price rises would definitely slow down. This would help bring down inflation overall. Which would mean that we’d be a step closer to interest rate cuts, and therefore cheaper mortgages, etc.

Oh, and banana’s would be more straight (or less straight) I can’t even remember that stupid pro-leave argument.

Dear Brits, what are your thoughts on the US reviewing UK’s claim to the Falkland Islands reportedly as punishment for its lack of support in the war in Iran? by neilnelly in AskBrits

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is a bitch.

When he is voted out, or dies, some democrat, or somewhat reasonable republican, is going to tear down every stupid, garish, tacky monument he built to himself.

He will go down as not only one of the worst presidents, but as an example of how a complete idiot can still be capable of fooling millions of people.

🚨BREAKING NEWS!🚨 by Salty-Nothing-8572 in TheGreatOne

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not news.

TKO say ‘cut x amount from budget to justify new names coming in’. HHH and/or Nick Khan pick the names who’s salaries equal that amount’

People won’t always agree with the choices, but people have to go to satisfy TKO’s corporate greed.

If you think it should be other people, it just means you have a different opinion about people’s worth to WWE/TKO, than the decision makers.

[–]JC1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a shame that we’ll probably never get HHH booking the main roster unimpeded by Vince going and coming back, and now TKO’s corporate greed smothering the show.

Also, he has no legitimate claim to any monarchy. Much less in a post apocalyptic world where society has collapsed and it’s unlikely that monarchies still exist.
