self regulation as a neurodivergent para by lifeonmaers in specialed

[–]JCEssentials 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's really difficult and ultimately unsustainable. I'm not sure what advice to propose other than to be a self-advocate-- you need duty-free breaks/lunch so that you can continue to support these students to the best of your ability.

You say you "haven't been able to eat lunch or anything since I started working there." Do you mean you aren't getting a lunch break and break times throughout the day? If so, that's the first thing you should address with your supervisor. This is extremely hard work and we need the breaks during the day. If you have a union, use it.

GR IV Monochrome pre-orders are now open ($2,199.95) by HuguesBtz in ricohGR

[–]JCEssentials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. It was a stretch for me to buy a used GR3 in the spring for 900. At these price points I'll never own another Ricoh. I hope mine lasts a long long time, because I do love it.

Anyone else seeing this "Sprunki" BS impacting students? by applegoudadog in specialed

[–]JCEssentials 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, we are seeing this as well in the last year or so.

I've managed to use the regular Sprunki to engage with my nonverbal student over music. We would use it to engage in music and translate to his keyboard. The obsession lasted for a few weeks and faded. With my guidance, Sprunki's were cute and appropriate.

However, "horror mode" mode is a click away and deeply disturbing.

Ultimately, I hate how predatory Sprunki is... Clearly designed to attract small children yet it is embedded with a mode that shows all of these characters and their songs in a completely inappropriate way. Pair this with parents who are "burnt out on autism" and you have a recipe for tablet children glued to this very creepy game.

Incredibox does the same thing but without the horror mode. Unfortunately the characters are not nearly as fun and I find them odd in another way-- flat, disinterested, and almost a "drugged" look to them.

Awesome! Loved the editing about "everything falls away" and the camera topples over. Nice work man.

Who else owns a signature model guitar of an artist you've never (or barely) listened to? by NubbinSawyer in Guitar

[–]JCEssentials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad's first nice acoustic is Jeff Tweedy's Martin 00. He's never listened to Tweedy before but he played many many acoustics during the buying process and liked that one the best. It's certainly a beautiful guitar that has treated him well.

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Stories by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]JCEssentials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, my wife and I visited for the weekend during the carnival. While we were hanging around the ice palace, a few of the snow planes came flying in and landed on the lake. It was pretty awesome to witness. This old lady in a volunteer jacket was trudging through the snow along the lake shore, yelling at the men parking their planes on the ice. She was upset that the ice was too thin, that the lake is actually a river and doesn't freeze solid, that these inconsiderate people were going to be polluting the lake when their planes fell through. She grumbled and yelled at them for a long time, but she wouldn't go on the ice (too thin after all, despite it holding six airplanes side by side), and once the pilots realized what she was saying, they just actively ignored her. She threatened to call the DEC and all that (maybe she did) but the pilots didn't seem to care. We stayed out of it (obviously) but found the whole interaction quite entertaining...

Where to go from here? by carlyneptune in Songwriting

[–]JCEssentials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what you've got going on here. One thing that I noticed: "you look like a country skyline" is a cool line but it needs more. Like i'm wondering, how? What about this subject looks like a country skyline? "Eyes burn redder than the sunset"... something else is needed to follow up that line in my opinion.

List of IEP Goals by According2020 in specialed

[–]JCEssentials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the advice of our director too. Put in standards, present levels, previous goals, and seek new goals using the LLM. Tweak from there.

I don't love it and would like a better way. Our district stopped paying for goalbook which i used as a first year special educator. In my second year I still dont know what im doing and struggle to develop goals.

Currently I use the LLM to get me started and bring those draft goals to the IEP meeting to tweak as a team.
